Career Search Tip for International Students from Rita Maximilian-Toth, Senior Career Consultant |
|
| |
| By your fourth week at GWSB, you may be settling into classes, meeting new people, and adjusting to life in Washington, D.C. This is also a time to think beyond your next internship or job and begin building a foundation for long-term growth.
Start by noticing what interests you. Which classes, projects, industries, or problems spark your curiosity? Keep a record of the skills you are developing and examples of how you have used them. Your multilingual abilities, adaptability, resilience, and global perspective are strengths that will continue to grow throughout your studies.
Choose one step this month: connect with a professor, join a student organization, attend a campus event, or have a conversation with someone whose path interests you. These experiences can deepen your self-awareness, expand your community, and help you make choices as your goals develop over time.

Coaching Tips from Sara Orrick, Senior Career Consultant |

Your resume’s interests section offers recruiters a glimpse into your personality and soft skills. To maximize its impact, skip broad, forgettable hobbies and get specific:
▶️Specify details: Replace generic items like "cooking," "traveling," or "running" with distinct details, such as baking artisan cakes, traveling by train, or running a sub-6-minute mile.
▶️Stay authentic: Never fake hobbies to sound impressive. Authentic interests reveal who you genuinely are and how you fit the team culture.
Have fun with it, stay true to yourself, and let your personality shine through!

Engaging in the events, organizations, and resources in GWSB was a highlight of my four years at GW. Not only did I cultivate meaningful friendships and connections that I maintain to this day, but I discovered what I wanted to pursue professionally. In fact, I found out about my current employer through an information session that Fowler & GWSB newsletters helped promote during my first year at GW.
In the GWSB community, you always know that someone is in your corner, rooting for your success!
