🚧 Cook County Oakton Street Improvements Meeting, October 10 |
Learn about proposed modifications to Oakton Street, between Skokie and McCormick Boulevards, at Cook County’s open house public meeting on Thursday, October 10, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Oakton Community Center, 4701 Oakton St.
What to expect: At the meeting, you’ll be able to review planned improvements from the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways (DoTH) and share your feedback directly with the project team.
Project overview: Proposed changes include modifying lane configurations to provide one travel lane in each direction, a center left turn lane, on-street bike lanes, on-street parking, and spot changes, such as curb extensions and pedestrian refuge islands. This project will also include roadway resurfacing, updated pavement markings and bus stop improvements. Construction is anticipated in 2026.
You should know: This portion of Oakton Street, like many major thoroughfares in Skokie, is under the jurisdiction of Cook County, which owns and maintains the roadway. Other major thoroughfares are under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). View Skokie’s street jurisdiction map (PDF).

🚴🏿 Fall Safety Tips for Cyclists
|
With daylight hours getting shorter, enhancing your visibility on the road is especially important for bicyclists during the fall and winter months.
|
- Wear bright colored clothing, especially at night. Wearing reflective clothing, such as a reflective safety vest, is preferred.
- Use a bike light. Illinois law requires a front light and rear reflector when riding at night. Front lights should be visible for at least 500 feet, and red rear reflector visible from 100 to 600 feet.
-
Wear a helmet. Your helmet should cover the top of your forehead and be about two inches above your eyebrows. The chin strap should be tight enough to fit one to two fingers between your chin and the strap. Place reflective tape or a headlight on your helmet to improve visibility.
|
Safety is everyone’s responsibility: Darkness reduces visibility for all roadway users, including drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians. Use extra caution when driving and traveling this season to keep yourself and others safe.
Test your knowledge: Take the Ride Illinois Bike Safety Quiz. The interactive teaching tool covers safety techniques and state laws, and is a learning resource for both drivers and bicyclists.
More tips: The Village’s Public Safety Commission provides traffic safety guidance for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration offers additional tips.

🌱 Reminder: Keep Plastic Out of Compost Bins
|
The Village offers 10 free and convenient (and popular) food scrap drop-off sites to help our community reduce organic material sent to the landfill.
Don’t contaminate the cart: Please keep non-compostable food packaging, such as plastic containers, plastic bags, waxed cardboard cartons, and cans, out of compost containers. Remove food from non-compostable packaging before placing it in the cart.
Get a refresher: Review what to put (and not put) in compost containers.
