Here we are, at the end of another school year. It seems just yesterday we were welcoming students to campus and opening our arms to you, sharing tissues (for happy or sad tears, or those Michigan allergies!), pens and STICKERS! Spartan Family Connections has celebrated its first full year as an official office, and we are so proud to serve our Spartan families. We have learned and experienced so much with you and your students throughout this past year. As we move forward, we will continue to honor and remember all that has happened, those whom we have loved and lost, and those healing physically, mentally and emotionally.
As we head into summer, we hope you take time to care for yourselves and others. We will be taking some time to rest and rejuvenate, then plan for the 2023-24 year, which will be here before we know it.
Until then, take good care,
Laurin

Commencements and What's Next
This is a big weekend for graduates and families alike. Yes, they are the ones who participate in the commencement ceremonies, but you were the one to answer the stressed, tearful calls as you reminded them that they could do it. Here you are, and here they are. They’ve done it! Find all the details about the ceremonies here and enjoy the celebrations!
After the mortar boards are thrown in the air, your student may wonder what’s next for them. Whether they are graduating with a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or their Ph.D, MSU’s Career Services Network will continue to be there to support their next steps through Handshake, MSU Connect and access to career resources!

Dining Rates and Buying Plans Early
You have likely felt the impact of the cost of goods and services in your lives, in the grocery store, big box stores, and any labor needed for projects or repairs. Increasing the housing and dining rates is a result of the same impact on the university. Students staying in the residence halls for their required second year have rates held as a part of that requirement, but students moving or currently living off campus may want to take advantage of current dining rates. By purchasing off-campus meal plans before July 1, you can take advantage of this year’s rates before the July 1 increase. Meal plans can be purchased through packages of 10 swipes (DineOn 10, DineOn 50 or DineOn 100), or through unlimited plans of Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Lock in the rates now before the July 1 increase!

Spartan Experience Record: Learning Beyond the Classroom
Your student is learning a lot at MSU beyond coursework alone — and now, they can prove it. The Spartan Experience Record (SER) helps students collect, document and verify out-of-class learning experiences that shape their education, from research to leadership positions to on-campus employment. The SER supports transferable skill development — the important skills employers and internship providers are looking for. Throughout their undergraduate experience, students can suggest an experience to be added to the SER through resources on the website. They can also discover more than 600 new ways to get involved on campus. Students can request their own SER alongside their transcript through the Registrar’s Office. Encourage your student to explore their interests, amplify their skills and think outside the classroom with the SER.

Welcome, Incoming Families!
We have many incoming families who have joined this Listserv since our last edition. Welcome to the Spartan family! Spartan Family Connections works to connect you, the families of Spartan students, to resources, support and information to help your student succeed at MSU with the goal of participating in commencement activities and becoming a Spartan alum. Our website has direct-linked resources, so you don’t have to search for them, previous communications through newsletters and webinars, a private Facebook group to help with in-the-moment topics and support from experienced Spartan families, and, we are only a phone call, email, or chat away for more personalized assistance! This is a big institution, and you can consider us as your guide along your student’s educational journey. We’re all in this for the same reason (student success!), so let us support you as you support your student!

Family Weekend 2023 Save the Date
We know you have been eagerly awaiting this information, and we are so excited to finally release the save the date. Join us for the second annual MSU Family Weekend Presented by Michigan State University Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) Nov. 3-5, 2023! Registration opens Aug. 14. More information, including an expanded events schedule, will be released over the summer. We will provide information in this monthly newsletter and include it on our website as it becomes available. Please note that football game tickets are not included in any of the Family Weekend events and must be purchased separately through the Athletic Ticket Office links.
Some of you may be aware that University of Michigan is also hosting its Family Weekend the same weekend in November. We acknowledge this may not be ideal for some families! There are many logistical details that go into planning the timing of Family Weekend, the largest of which being the need to work around Big Ten football schedules. We apologize for any inconvenience!
If your family needs financial support to attend Family Weekend, please complete this survey by July 28 to be considered for subsidized registration. Decisions will be made prior to the opening of registration so families will know if they will have assistance to attend. Click here if you would like to support another families’ attendance at Family Weekend events. Special thanks to the generous support of MSUFCU in making these supports possible.

MSU UAB Spring Arts & Crafts and East Lansing Art Festival The MSU Spring Arts and Crafts Show is Saturday, May 20, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday, May 21, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., at the MSU Union Grounds. With 250 small business crafters and artists and the East Lansing Art Festival taking place in Downtown East Lansing, this celebration of art and community is guaranteed to have something for everyone.
This show, as well as the Winter Arts & Crafts show, are crucial fundraisers for the University Activities Board (UAB). All proceeds from the events go directly to the UAB budget to support hosting amazing events throughout the year for all MSU students, free of charge. UAB students work to create connection, belonging, and memories for the Spartan community.
The UAB office resides in the MSU Union, and we'd like to acknowledge the emotional impact of hosting this first large fundraiser after the campus events in February. We hope this showcase of local arts and crafts provides positive fellowship and healing to attendees as well as to our team members as we feel the support and care of our Spartan community.
More information on the Arts & Crafts Show can be found here. If you'd like to help promote our event, more information can be found through our Facebook event.
Running concurrently to the MSU Spring Arts & Crafts Show is the East Lansing Art Festival. This year the festival celebrates its 60th anniversary with a full lineup of performers as well as an artist demonstration area filled with interactive and learning experiences from many types of artists. You can find 180-200 artists at the festival each year. Find out more about the East Lansing Art Festival including schedules, artist information, and maps and site plans here or follow them on Facebook.
