Spotlight on Outstanding 2024 Graduate Scholars

Muyang Chunga
Meet Muyang Chunga, one of Coppin State University’s Outstanding 2024 Graduate Scholars. Muyang was born in Yaounde, Cameroon, has roots in Nigeria, and was raised in Montgomery County, Maryland. She will graduate with a degree in Biology & Life Sciences with a Pre-Physician's Assistant concentration and a minor in Chemistry.
Initially she chose to major in biology with a goal of becoming a doctor so she could help others. However, after working in the Laboratory of Environmental/Emerging Contaminants in the Department of Natural Sciences, the young scholar realized she had a “deeper calling” for bioscience/research. “The "behind the scenes" of helping people,” she said.
Muyang plans to take a gap semester, this coming fall, before applying for a PhD program in Environmental Engineering or Sciences. “While I am on my gap, I will continue my research work with the Baltimore City Department of Public Works, Ashburton Filtration Plant. As well as supporting the transfer of the LEC to the incoming undergrad [sic] researchers as I am the laboratory's head researcher,” she shared. Muyang began as an intern and worked with her managers to create a pathway for future interns to full-time employment.  She will be the first to assume this full-time role upon graduation.
Muyang hopes her future is filled with prosperity and peace. She has spent every moment from as early as the third grade striving for leadership positions in Girls on the Run to now heading a research lab on campus, being a three-year peer mentor for incoming freshmen [sic], and creating a new internship with our local government.  She also hopes to obtain her doctorate.
Her wish for the class of 2024 is, “I hope they can fight on! I believe we have entered a time in which the current generation has been spread so thin even their burnout has burnout. What we as a class need to remember is that life doesn't survive in eutrophic conditions. So, though it is full of nutrients, to support the lives we want and those of the ones we love, we must not stay stagnant like the water. We must continue to flow like the river. If we get tired and begin to slow down, we may rely on our nearby streams (our village) to flow into us and ensure we never become the waters of a pond. I know that if any generation can, it is our graduating class, and I hope to see us become the change we need.”
