Laker to Laker: Message from the Provost

Dear Colleagues,
I hope everyone stayed safe and took time to reconnect with family and friends over the extended weekend. Let's take it together to the final stretch of the semester. Remember that we are here to serve you and make your work successful and rewarding. Please don't hesitate to reach out.
Have a great week everyone,
Fatma

P.S. Thank you to the faculty who have expressed their interest in working on the two first-year student projects (see below). Faculty members who have an interest in this opportunity are encouraged to apply.

Faculty Opportunity

In last week's Lakers Ready, Provost Mili announced in the Laker to Laker section the launch of two semester-long projects to begin in Winter 2023.
  • A rapid response team will be created to closely monitor a variety of data indicators and design real time interventions. This team will be focused on first year students and running one/two-week cycles of data collection and action. In addition to staff and administrators, the team will include faculty teaching first year courses.
  • The above quantitative driven action team will be complemented with qualitative data collection. Narratives are needed from students and alumni about their experience, what helped them, what barriers they faced, and what insight they are willing to share with us.
If faculty are interested in working on one of these projects, send a paragraph of interest to provost@gvsu.edu by Wednesday, December 7. The commitment is estimated to be 10 hours a week for which faculty and their unit head can decide how best to fit it within the faculty's existing commitments. A $5,000 stipend will also be provided.

Scholarship Highlight

Congratulations to Christian Glupker, Affiliate Faculty of Practice in Economics; Paul Isely, Associate Dean, Seidman College of Business; and Erik Nordman, Associate Professor of Biology, for their $23,000 award to assess the economic and hedonic impact of the White River on local communities in Muskegon, Newaygo, and Oceana counties. The study was sponsored by the West Michigan Shoreline Regional Development Commission.
