Malicious Machines: The Intersection of Phishing and LLMs |
Carlos Olea & Maxwell Lieb
Wednesday, March 19th 12-1 pm | 1400 18th Ave S A2009
Phishing remains one of the most prevalent threats in cybersecurity today. Despite advancements in email security and phishing detection, threat actors continue to exploit users to gain initial access. The rise of Large Language Models (LLMs) introduces new concerns, enabling attackers to enhance the quality and scale of their phishing campaigns.
In this talk, Carlos Olea (Computer Science doctoral student) and Maxwell Lieb (VUIT) will present research conducted with a large cross-university team on the effectiveness of both human- and LLM-generated phishing emails among Vanderbilt undergraduates. They will explore phishing as a social engineering tactic, examining current technical defenses, user vulnerabilities, and the unique challenges posed by LLM-generated emails, particularly in the context of user training gaps and enterprise security limitations. Pizza lunch will be served.
