Medical Students Host ‘Look at Larner’ Event |
Aspiring medical students from populations underrepresented in medicine visited the University of Vermont September 7–9, 2023, for Look at Larner, an outreach program led by current Larner medical students that offered potential applicants an opportunity to envision what their experience in medical school might look like. Activities included lessons in the anatomy lab, clinical simulations, campus tours, and admissions advice.

| Cheung Named Interim Director |
Katharine Cheung, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of medicine, assumed the role of interim director of the Center on Aging, effective September 1. A geriatric and palliative nephrologist, Cheung served on the center’s advisory board from 2017 to 2023.

Lyme Disease Vaccine Trial at UVM |
There are currently no approved vaccines available to prevent Lyme disease in humans, but one may be on the way. UVM’s Vaccine Testing Center recently launched a clinical study to investigate the efficacy, safety, and immunogenicity of a Lyme vaccine.

| Stevenson Granted Alum Award |
Andra Stevenson, Ph.D.’01, M.P.H., senior director of global medical affairs for Merck & Co. Inc., received the 2023 Distinguished Graduate Alumni Award and presented the Distinguished Alumni Lecture on September 19 as part of the Dean’s Celebration of Excellence in Research at Larner College of Medicine.

As part of the UVM Larner College of Medicine’s Dean’s Celebration of Excellence in Research highlighting the outstanding research efforts of faculty, fellows, and graduate students, an awards ceremony on September 21 recognized the remarkable contributions of Larner and UVM researchers and their dedication to advancing medicine and science.

Staff Appreciation Week, which takes place every September across the entire campus, is a way for the University of Vermont to celebrate, honor, and thank the many incredible staff members who make up the UVM community. This year, several individuals from the Larner College of Medicine reached significant milestones in their careers at UVM. Their dedication and service are immensely appreciated.

Margaret Tandoh, M.D., FACS, associate professor of surgery and associate dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion, recently completed the Healthcare Executive Diversity and Inclusion Certificate, sponsored by the AAMC. Her capstone project is titled “Creating a Retention Program for URiM Faculty at the Larner College of Medicine.”

Investigators from the International Centre for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh and the UVM Larner College of Medicine's Vaccine Testing Center, led by Beth Kirkpatrick, M.D., are the first to study a promising tetravalent dengue vaccine in dengue-endemic Bangladesh. Their work, evaluating the single-dose tetravalent dengue vaccine candidate TV005, demonstrated safety and immune responsiveness in children and adults.

Executive Director of the Vermont Child Health Improvement Plan (VCHIP) Rachel Garfield, Ph.D., recently addressed a critical issue—a decreasing pediatric subspecialty workforce—in a report published by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM).
