By Orlando Ricardo Menes
We cannot buy it in bulk at Trader Joe's,
Swap it for gold, or hoard shares of Grace, Inc.,
To hedge against bad luck. We acquire it
Without contract, promissory notes, or IOUs,
Neither codicils nor fine print. We gather
Grace safe from litigation or severance,
And though we might breach the strictures of creed,
It cannot be forfeited or suspended. Rather,
Grace is asymmetric, parabolic, skewed to love,
Immanent and absolute, but also unpredictable
As quantum particles, both here and there,
Both full and empty, so it might arrive
Inopportunely and thus slip under hope,
Upsetting the earnest prayer, teasing our faith,
Like some rain bands, copious cumuli,
That appear astray, unbidden, in stagnant skies
To drench at last the drought-scourged earth.
With Gratitude,
Jen

Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness at GVSU |
Mindfulness has been well-documented to support numerous enhancements to wellbeing, but recent studies demonstrate the need for trauma-sensitive approaches. Since Fall 2020, GVSU students have had the option to take a one-credit course introducing them to trauma-sensitive mindfulness (TSM) practices, IDS 105: Mindfulness as a College Success Tool. Approximately 800 students have taken this course to date, with most students reporting significant improvements in numerous areas, including concentration, time management, stress reduction, self-efficacy, emotional regulation, compassion, and belonging he same remarkable outcomes.
Based on the profound success of IDS 105, the Office of the Provost has supported efforts to incorporate TSM activities into existing courses since Summer 2023. Presentations and workshops promoting TSM have been offered to a variety of audiences, including deans, unit heads, faculty, staff, and selected undergraduate and graduate student groups. Around a thousand scripts for TSM practices were distributed at these various events, and many faculty have integrated TSM activities into their courses. In addition, there have been multiple semester-long learning communities on TSM.
For more information, please contact Professor Karen Gipson (gipsonk@gvsu.edu).
