Transgender and nonbinary people experience homelessness at higher rates than their cisgender peers, and disproportionately experience unsheltered homelessness and associated adverse health outcomes. Medical respite programs play a uniquely important role in addressing this multi-faceted injustice, but they often face barriers in their pursuit of gender-affirming services for both guests and staff, including pre-existing physical infrastructure, limited workforce development, outdated policies and procedures, and thin community partnerships.
Beginning September 2024, the National Institute for Medical Respite Care, a special program of the National Health Care for the Homeless Council, will host a four-session online Learning Collaborative where participants will explore best practices for building a gender-affirming medical respite program. Participants will learn from experts in the field and collaborate with medical respite programs across the country to identify areas of improvement and take tangible steps toward a more inclusive medical respite community.
