Gimme Gimme Gimme a Match after Midnight
|
On March 15, the Larner College of Medicine’s Class of 2024—clad in ʼ70s and disco-themed attire in keeping with this year’s Match Day theme, “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme a Match after Midnight”—took the next significant step toward becoming fully-fledged physicians: learning where they will begin their residencies after they receive their M.D.s in May.

| Investiture of Dr. Vizzard |
In a formal ceremony held on March 14 at the Larner College of Medicine, Professor of Neurological Sciences Margaret Vizzard, Ph.D., was invested as the inaugural holder of the Colleen A. and Gregory L. Holmes Green and Gold Professorship in Neurological Sciences Research. Alongside her esteemed role as an educator, Vizzard serves as the vice chair of research and education at the College.

| Larner's Online M.M.S. Program
|
Jenna Borovinsky, master of medical science (M.M.S.) degree student, speaks about her experience in the online program at the Larner College of Medicine while living in California, to use the program as a springboard to medical school. Larner offers the M.M.S. degree either fully online or on campus, with the option to complete the program in 12 months or on a part-time basis.

| ACCOLADES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Larner community members were honored with awards for excellence in the areas of gender equity and inclusion at the fifth annual Celebration of Gender Equity in Medicine and Science, hosted by the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on March 7 at the Larner College of Medicine. Debora Kamin Mukaz, Ph.D., M.S., presented a keynote address on “Intersectionality.”

Associate Professor of Pharmacology Karen Glass, Ph.D., was recently honored with an award totaling more than $380,000 from the National Science Foundation’s Mid-Career Advancement (NSF MCA) program for her proposed project, “Application of Cryo-Electron Microscopy to Determine the Structure of Epigenetic Regulatory Complexes.” Glass is the first UVM faculty member to receive an NSF MCA award.

Several Larner faculty and students presented research at the American Heart Association EPI/Lifestyle Scientific Sessions 2024 in Chicago March 18–21, including Debora Kamin Mukaz, Ph.D., M.S., Timothy Plante, M.D., M.H.S., Samuel Short, M.D. ’23, Avery Campbell ’26, Krystal Ramos Barerra ’26, Emmanuel Ogunlana ’26, and Sarah Krumholz ’26.

Assistant Professor of Medicine Tanush Gupta, M.D., has been named a recipient of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions 30 in Their 30s Award. This honor is awarded to early-career interventionalists who demonstrate professional excellence and exemplify the values of service and teamwork in their interventional cardiology practice.

Peter Hyson, M.D., assistant professor of medicine, was recently honored with the Physician-Scientist Transition Award for Basic and Translational Research by UVM’s Translational Global Infectious Diseases Research Center. The award for his project, titled “Target-based Development of Small Molecules Against Human Babesiosis,” will support his research for 18 months.

In anticipation of the Larner College of Medicine’s fifth annual Professionalism Week in May, Dean Page’s review committee invites nominations by noon on March 29, 2024, of employees or students of the Larner College of Medicine who demonstrate the tenets of Larner’s Professionalism Statement in their daily work and personal lives.

In celebration of UVM’s recent historic increase in sponsored research and to commemorate UVM becoming a Top 100 Public Research University in the United States, the University of Vermont’s Office of Research is excited to announce the third annual UVM Research Week April 15–19, with events highlighting and celebrating UVM’s research, scholarship, and creative works.
