Carol Fadda: Lebanon & Palestine in FocusCarol W.N. Fadda, Associate Professor in the Department of English at Syracuse University will discuss the war on Gaza and Lebanon, address the connections between these two sites, with a focus on the longer history of Israeli violence and occupation in Palestine and Lebanon.

Yang Hongwei: Woodcut Artist in ResidenceWork by visiting woodcut artist Yang Hongwei (Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing) will be on view during a special pop-up exhibition in conjunction with his visit to Colgate. In addition, he will give lectures on the Code of Art and give a workshop on printmaking.

Panel Discussion: History & Culture of Chinese Diaspora in Latin America and the U.S.Come join the Chinese Interest Association (CIA) and Latin American Students Organization (LASO) November 12th at Noon in the ALANA MPR to talk about the History & Culture of Chinese Diaspora in Latin America and the United States. Chinese food catered from Taste of China and empanadas will be served.

The Chinese Interest Association and Anime Club will discuss Donghua (Anime) and show a Chinese Donghua movie on November 13th at 5:30 PM in the ALANA MPR. Tea and Chinese snacks will be served.

AAPI Voices and Stories: Community-based Digital Storytelling
The ASIANetwork - Mellon AAPI Voices and Stories initiative provides grants to pursue collaborative projects with AAPI community members near ASIANetwork campuses. Sign up here to join the November 2 information session. Applications due November 10.
Embodied Learning About Asia
The Embodied Learning About Asia program provides grants of up to $10,000 to support the invitation of an experienced practitioner of an Asian art or cultural practice to one or more ASIANetwork campuses for a period of residency. Letters of Intent due December 1.
Amoloza Conference Travel Award
The Teddy Amoloza Conference Award of $1,000 will be given to up to four junior faculty members and undergraduate students who are presenting at the ASIANetwork Annual Conference. Rolling basis.
McJimsey Student Essay Award
ASIANetwork invites undergraduate students from member institutions to submit papers for the Marianna McJimsey Award, which recognizes undergraduate student research dealing with Asia or the Asian diaspora. Applications due January 15.

First Korean Conversation TableOn October 2, 2024, the first Korean Conversation Table was held in the Asian Studies Center. Students, faculty, and community members interested in Korean language and culture came together to learn from Julia Kang, the Korean Coordinator for Colgate’s Less Commonly Taught Languages Program. Participants learned how to introduce themselves and ask some introductory questions in Korean before mingling and enjoying snacks.
Conversation Tables are held every other Wednesday from 4:00-5:00 pm in the Asian Studies Center (19 Persson Hall). The final meeting will be on November 13.

Film Screening: In Search of Bengali Harlem
On October 3, the Ryan Family Film Series hosted a screening of In Search of Bengali Harlem (2022), directed by Vivek Bald and Alaudin Ullah. The film follows Ullah as he discovers the lost history of his Bangladeshi parents and their immigration to Harlem.

Otsukimi PartyJapanese language intern Kotomi Shimizu hosted an Otsukimi (お月見, moon viewing) celebration on October 4, 2024. Before the start of the event, volunteers helped prepare sweet Japanese rice dumplings called dango to serve at the party. Three kinds of dango were served: kinako (roasted soybean flour), mitarashi (soy glaze), and black sesame paste.

Mid-Autumn FesitvalThe Chinese Interest Association hosted their Mid-Autumn Festival celebration at ALANA on Saturday, October 5. The festivities began with several student performances, including a guzheng performance by Jerry Zhang ‘26 and a vocal performance by Sia Hu ‘26 and Haiyu Zhu ‘27. Following the student performances, attendees shared a meal catered by Red Chili Restaurant in Syracuse.

The Message and the MessengerThursday, October 17 was an exciting night in the Hall of Presidents: the Muslim Students Association hosted The Message and the Messenger, an evening event with a seven-course Indian and Mediterranean feast and a comedy show by CNN’s “America’s Funniest Muslim,” Azhar Usman. The event began with opening remarks from MSA’s Co-President Sayed Hassan ‘27 and Treasurer Pahul Sachdeva ‘25, followed by an introduction of the Campus Imam, Ahmet Çelik.

Henna NightOn October 27, 2024, the Hindu Student Association hosted a Henna Night in preparation for the upcoming Diwali celebration (11/1). Two talented henna artists, one of which was the well-known SK Henna (Saliha Khawaja), were busy creating beautiful designs all evening. When students were not receiving their designs, they enjoyed decorating rangoli, indulging in an Indian meal, and listening to music.
