Senator Elizabeth Warren's Obvious Exclusion From Digital Assets Subcommittee |
Senator Elizabeth Warren, Ranking Member of the Senate Banking Committee, could have appointed U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE) to the new Senate Banking Subcommittee on Digital Assets. But instead, she selected lawmakers who are part of her “coalition” primarily focused on illicit use of crypto - specifically Senators Tina Smith (MN) and Chris Van Hollen (MD).
With just four Members to choose, positioning Ruben Gallego as Ranking Member was a very smart move. But why not also appoint Senator Blunt Rochester who last year co-sponsored the bipartisan Deploying American Blockchains Act (H.R. 6572) with Congressman Larry Bucshon (IN-8), which passed in the House.
Interestingly, a spot went to Senator Mark Warner (VA) who last Congress said, “As Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, I remain deeply concerned that criminals and rogue states continue to use crypto to launder money, evade sanctions, and conceal illicit activity.”
Strangely, Senator Blunt Rochester, who explored crypto as a co-creator of the House bipartisan Future of Work Caucus, did not make the cut. She sought to harness innovative blockchain technology to protect consumers, support businesses, and grow our economy.
Senator Warren, who has declared war on crypto, also had other options on the Committee: Raphael G. Warnock (GA) or Angela D. Alsobrooks (MD)
Data shows Black, Latino, AAPI, Indigenous communities are the largest adopters of crypto. That fact makes this omission particularly bizarre.
Senator Warren’s blind spots are very clear and damaging.
