| Essentials of Teaching and Assessment Course

Friday, September 5, 2025; 8:00 am-4:00 pm; Davis Center
A one-day intensive course held every September to introduce participants to the pedagogy, strategies, and resources for effective teaching and assessment. This course is designed especially for faculty, residents, fellows, graduate students, and postdocs new to teaching.
This event is open to all UVM Larner College of Medicine faculty, students, and staff at all teaching sites in the University of Vermont Health Network and the Clinical Branch Campus/Nuvance Health in Connecticut. College of Nursing and Health Sciences faculty are also welcome.

This session will be a thought experiment, with the goal of challenging the current status quo of tiered, norm-referenced grading. We will review current data regarding some of the flaws of this grading schema.

Elzerie de Jager, MBBS(Hons), PhD, Teaching Academy Member and Assistant Professor of Medicine, will be presenting work at APHA this fall that resulted from her project in the Teaching Academy’s Medical Education Fellowship Program.
- Abby Hielscher, PhD, Teaching Academy Expert Teacher and Associate Professor of Neurological Sciences, completed the IAMSE IM-REACH Mentoring Program. The IM-REACH Mentoring Program is a scholarly professional development program that prepares participants for diverse roles as leaders of mentoring programs, as well as mentors that support mentees in their career paths and academic pursuits.

Anna Ricci, PhD, Teaching Academy Member and Assistant Professor, Neurological Sciences, received a 2025 IAMSE Travel Award to attend the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) Annual Conference to present a poster “Faculty Self-Assessment of Teaching and its Usage in Health Professions Education: A Scoping Review Protocol” and attended workshops and sessions on topics ranging from active learning, AI in medical education, and faculty development.
- Bei Zhang, MD, PhD, MLS (ASCP), Teaching Academy Distinguished Educator and Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, completed this year’s IAMSE Medical Educator Fellowship Program. The Fellowship program is designed to develop well-rounded medical education scholars with additional evidence of specialized achievement that enhances and supports career advancement.
