The Psychology of Pumpkin Spice *Â |
What is it about pumpkin spice, and Pumpkin Spice Lattes (PSL), that has such a hold on us each fall? We asked Mike Miller, Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology, to help unpack the seasonal obsession.Â
|
|
|
|
- Why do you think pumpkin spice has become such a cultural phenomenon, especially in the fall?Â
Pumpkin spice is less about the spice and more about the spell. Itâs an edible incantation, signaling the great turning: from sun to shadow, heat to hearth, frenzy to reflection. Psychologically, itâs a transitional object, like a blanket for the collective soul. In a world that rarely pauses, the first PSL whispers: you may sit now. -
Are there certain psychological or emotional benefits to seasonal rituals like grabbing that first PSL of the year?Â
YES! Itâs called Pumpkin-Latte-Emotive-Spice-Tation! Approximately 3.2 minutes into drinking the first PSL of the season, neuronal activity in the Acumbens-whatever starts to really RAMP up baby! (Citation needed)Â
|
* This is a light-hearted take on the season from Professor Miller and an AI model that he works with for research, Nesbo+ (ChatGPT4o).

âBooked âEmâ: Clarkâs Backstage Pass with Dan Portnoy â79 |
As a student at Clark in the late 1970s, Dan Portnoy â79 helped turn Clark into a stop for some of the eraâs most iconic performers. From booking The Cars before they hit the charts to signing Talking Heads months before their debut album, Portnoy found himself at the center of Clarkâs thriving live music scene.
âFunny story: Whenever a Talking Heads (or Cars, among others) song comes on the radio, I always call out, âBooked âem!â My kids, of course, roll their eyes. Heyâitâs only been a couple thousand times.â
Read more about how Dan brought major acts to Clark, and what it was like to run the show behind the scenes.

As the leaves change, so can our moods. Here are a few ways to care for your mental health as the season shifts. Â
đïž Manage the OverwhelmÂ
Fall can mean packed schedules and rising stress. Make time for small breaks. Even 10 minutes to yourself can reset your brain.Â
đ Find Joy in Little RitualsÂ
Whether it's your favorite drink, playlist, or walk route, simple routines can add structure and comfort to your day.Â
đ§ Talk About ItÂ
October 10 is World Mental Health Day. Use it as a reminder to check in with yourself and those around you. Â
đ Start SmallÂ
If youâre feeling off, you donât need to overhaul your life. Even a small act, like texting a friend or drinking water, can shift your mindset.Â
