November News
Lila Music & Nature Centre |
Hello community,
After a full and warming summer, I'm enjoying the autumnal activities as the Lila programs settle into a rhythm and tempo. It is so good to connect through the choir and nature programs, as we delve into the darkest days, and take comfort and warmth from being creative together, as the days continue to get shorter. I feel blessed and grateful to be able to share in all the ways that we do.
To honour our inner light, we are thrilled to once again join together to celebrate the sun's return with our 9th Annual Winter Solstice Concert. We have two shows in Duncan and one show in Victoria (more info below). Our friends Anne Schaefer, Kim June Johnson, Adrian Dolan, Quin Etheridge-Pedden, Scott White and myself, will be sharing our musical offerings during these two darkest nights of the year, honouring our ancestors and celebrating bringing the light back in. We are excited to share with you harmonies, strings, original compositions, Roma, Celtic and French Canadian songs, together with some classics to warm your hearts. We have a special Early Bird Price Ticket available ONLY in NOVEMBER.
The Fire Within, a 5 month women's offering, which together with Stephanie Mackay, we just completed our final gathering last weekend. What a wonderful gathering of women. We sat in circle, sang, crafted and dove into the mysteries held within myth. We launched this series to explore the deeper meaning of what it means to be a woman entering the Crone phase of life. With the myth of Persephone as our guide, and nature as our teacher, incorporating song and ceremony, we took a deep dive witnessing each other, and awakening new intentions for this important time in our lives.
While there is struggle, strife, loneliness and pain all around us, may we continue to find ways in which we can truly feel a sense of belonging. May we know we are never in fact alone. May we allow the beauty that surrounds us, nourish us in the great healing ways that only nature can provide. May we learn to cherish and honour our own personal sacred flame, as a reflection of the beauty that is around us. May we never close off the connection with our grief and suffering, as within that sorrow, we may find our personal dance of embracing life's constant dance with grief and gratitude.
Blessings,
Cari

Welcoming Dawn to the Lila Team
I'd like to introduce you all to Dawn Howlett, who joined me last spring to help organize and write for all the Lila events. Dawn is a professional organizer and writer (and some of you will remember her as a former co-owner at Resthouse). She brings a lot of creative flow and business savvy to helping me do almost everything from website content, newsletters to prepping for events.
It's been a pretty great addition, helping me get out there in the field, doing the work I love to do, knowing I've got someone helping out with the many details that are necessary to make it all happen. I am truly grateful. xoxo
Join me in welcoming Dawn.

| Apologies.
We made a mistake last newsletter on the pricing for the Cedar Weaving. It is in fact, $150 and includes instructions, supplies and enough time and support to complete a small weaving. The Quw'utsun's Elder Backyard Sessions are not for profit, we simply pay the elders for sharing their wisdom and knowledge.
Thank you for your understanding & support. We appreciate it.

| Briar Rose & the Indigenous Memory of Mother Europe |
Sat. November 24th
1pm - 5pm $30
Lila Yurt
Purchase tickets here
An evening with indigenous, cultural activist Kakisimo Iskwew and Tad Hargrave delving into the deeper layers of the tale of Sleeping Beauty.
We’ll be making the case that more of the European indigenous memory survived than we’ve been led to believe - much of it in the form of common folk and fairy tales you likely heard as a child or watched as Disney movies. Here’s the core idea of our time together: If you are willing to look at fairy tales as memory, not just metaphor, you’ll get further with them. In this evening, we’ll be coming to a small portion of that cultural memory via the old Grimm’s tale Briar Rose - a version of the Sleeping Beauty story that exists in many versions around the world.
Come join us.

| Here's what's cooking at the Lila farm this month
I have had a dream for about 4 years, of planting, growing, tending, harvesting and creating Elberberry Tinctures, Syrups and such.
A few years back, I had the great fortune of studying with master herbalist, Seraphina Capranos, for 2 years in her Herbalism training with Pacific Rim College, in her Plant Spirit Medicine course, and learnt how to make herbal remedies. This will be my first time selling these healing remedies. It feels special to be offering these creations from the land, created with loving intentions for the community.
I have ELDERBERRY SYRUP and TINCTURES for sale and ELDERBERRY FIRE CIDER on it's way.
An ancient healing tree, it has been used in folk medicine for thousands of years. Elderberry syrup is often used to treat cold and flu symptoms, and may help reduce congestion and shorten the duration of symptoms. Elderberry's anti-inflammatory properties may help reduce stress and improve mood.
Reach out to CARI directly if you'd like to order some.
Prices vary, as each jar size is different.
