Federal Government Shutdown: What It Means for Stevens

From: Nariman Farvardin, President | To: Stevens Students, Faculty and Staff |
The federal government faces a funding deadline of September 30, and a shutdown appears increasingly likely. I want to provide you with information about how a potential government shutdown may affect our university operations and, most importantly, what support is available to you.
Stevens will remain fully operational. Our classes, research and campus services will continue without interruption. Stevens maintains financial reserves to ensure continuity of operations and student support during temporary federal disruptions. However, some federal processes may experience delays that could affect members of our community.

-
Students and Families: Current federal aid disbursements should continue initially, but new FAFSA processing may be delayed. If you have questions, please contact the Office of Financial Aid. Federal work-study payments to students will not be affected by a shutdown.
-
International Students and Scholars: If you are in F-1/J-1 status sponsored by Stevens, a potential federal government shutdown will not affect your current immigration status; however, some federal processes (such as Social Security issuance, NJ MVC SAVE verification and E-Verify) may experience delays. The Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) continues to strongly caution against international travel at this time given ongoing uncertainties in federal immigration policies. All F-1/J-1students must continue to maintain full-time enrollment, and all F-1/J-1 students and scholars are advised to carry a hard copy of your most recent I-94 record and report address updates through the ISSS Portal. For guidance and support, contact ISSS at isss@stevens.edu or 201-216-5189.
-
Faculty and Researchers: Federal research agencies such as NSF, NIH, DoD and DOE will pause reviews and new awards during a shutdown, and agency contacts may be unavailable. Current awards usually continue during a shutdown but reporting and renewals may be delayed. Please note that faculty working in federal labs or on cooperative agreements may face additional restrictions. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Innovation will post updated information relevant to proposals and awards on their website as it becomes available. Contact the Office of Sponsored Programs at osp@stevens.edu with specific questions about research funding.
- Campus Partners: Some federal collaborations and site visits may be postponed until normal operations resume.
