As part of the Newcomb Art Museum’s 30th Anniversary season, visitors are invited to experience two exhibitions that commemorate the artistic legacy of H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College.

Quiet Reserve: Stitching an Ambitious New Woman, curated by Sarah Brokenborough, graduate curatorial assistant and PhD student in Art History, traces how Newcomb’s embroidery program fostered a generation of industrious, self-sufficient artists prepared to participate in the region’s changing cultural and economic landscape. Through original examples of students’ “art needlework,” the exhibition highlights a curriculum that redefined and reinforced ideas of womanhood and labor in the early twentieth century.

Also continuing this fall is The Moss Mystique: Southern Women and Newcomb Pottery, which examines the enduring influence of Newcomb Pottery and the women artisans who helped redefine perceptions of the South through a ceramic tradition inspired by its landscape and culture. Together, these shows illuminate Newcomb’s vital place in women’s education and American decorative arts.
