The Association for Women in Mathematics and Math for America cosponsor an essay contest each year for students in three categories: Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12, and Undergraduate. Contestants interview a woman or an individual from an underrepresented gender identity in a mathematical career about their life and work, and then they write and submit a short biographical essay based on their interview (500-1000 words). You can find out more at awm-math.org/awards/student-essay-contest: contest rules, an FAQ, submission instructions, etc. Essays will be judged based on content, grammar, presentation, and the presence of an authentic author's voice.
Please enter! We'd love to read your essay (and your friends' essays, and your siblings' essays, and...). There are no restrictions on the nationality or gender of contestants.
The deadline is February 1, 2027. Submissions will open on November 1, 2026 on https://www.mathprograms.org/.

One important thing to know:
MTTC tests for education majors
|
Math education students: You should aim to complete your content area MTTC (Michigan Test for Teacher Certification) as soon as possible after completing your math coursework. This is typically after your junior year and before starting your TA (apprenticeship) semester.
You will need to pass all MTTC tests corresponding to your certification grade band(s) and subject area(s).
