REFLECTIONS

Navigating the Legislature the Rotary Way

 by Emily Lang
As a new legislative session gets underway, policy makers are again considering the priorities and direction for our state. Participation in our democracy is an obligation, and as someone who has been in and around the state capitol for the last two decades, I can tell you that citizen voices matter in the rotunda.

Here are some things to consider as you lean into this legislative session:

Getting involved starts with paying attention. You can search bills by subject or bill number at oklegistature.gov. Once you’ve identified the bills you care about, you can sign up to receive notifications as those bills make their way through the legislative process. There are organizations and subscription services that will help you create a tracking list and set up reports to trigger additional advocacy efforts within your organization. If you have questions, I’m happy to provide some additional guidance, or ask any lobbyist – they know how to do this too.  READ MORE

Rotary Magazine - Feb. 2022

The Rotary magazine strives to bring you some positive news, which we hope can lift your spirits in the cold winter of February.
Click here to read the February 2022 issue.  The link will take you to your digital copy, which you can read using any common web browser.
The cover story focuses on a Chicago academy that teaches young people how to use rap skills to create positive change in their city. With an assist from Rotary, Emcee Skool offers workshops and classes that not only train rappers and emcees but also develop young artists into peace ambassadors and role models who work to stem the tide of violence and bloodshed in their communities.
In addition, we present readers with a special feature on the curriculum at Rotary's seven peace centers around the globe and examine how these carefully crafted classes for the next generation of global change-makers help address specific aspects of the peacebuilding process.
