Presbyterian Pastor from Birmingham, Alabama, with close ties in Nashville, traveled this past August with 25 Reform Jewish rabbis to a conference in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, entitled “Crisis and Creativity”, hosted by the Hebrew Union College. He will share some of his experiences on this unique journey.
Led by The Reverend Dr. Edwin G. Hurley.
Dr. Edwin Gray Hurley (Ed) is Pastor Emeritus of South Highland Presbyterian Church, Birmingham, Alabama, where he served for 22 years, having retired in 2024. SHPC is a historic congregation founded in 1888, located near downtown Birmingham, seeking to help all become “fully alive with the passion of Christ.” Dr. Hurley previously served churches in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Monroe, Louisiana, and Bowling Green, Kentucky. Ed grew up in El Dorado, Arkansas. He graduated from McCallie School, Chattanooga, Tennessee. He received his B.A. degree from Vanderbilt University with a double major in history and English, his M.Div. Degree from Princeton Theological Seminary, and his D.Min. degree from Fuller Theological Seminary. Ed did graduate study at New College, the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, as a recipient of the graduate study fellowship for parish ministry awarded by Princeton Theological Seminary. Ed and Gayle recently celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary. Gayle is an artist, beekeeper, former children’s choir director, and a person always curious about new things! Ed and Gayle have three children, Stuart (Tracy), Peter, and Catherine (Hunter), and five grandchildren, Kelly, Hayden, Winfield, Henry, and Gray. Ed remains active in the Presbytery of Sheppards & Lapsley, previously serving as Moderator of Presbytery. He has served as a commissioner to several general assemblies. He serves as Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Outreach Foundation of the Presbyterian Church, with whom he has traveled worldwide, last year to Pakistan, Syria, Lebanon, and Poland, and this coming fall, he will travel with a team to China. Additionally, he has traveled eight times to Israel, two of those occasions being to co-lead Jewish–Christian Friendship Pilgrimages. Ed serves on the advisory board of the Beeson Divinity School, Samford University.
