You may have noticed worshippers at St. B's lighting votive candles after taking the bread and wine of Eucharist. Lighting votive candles in prayer has a long history in the Anglican tradition, of which the Episcopal Church is a part. We light these small candles as a way to focus and be intentional in our concerns for ourselves or for others. The light of the candle is a symbol of the light of Christ coming to us in our prayer, which is often a time of darkness. At St. B's, we use over 5000 votive candles a year! Our request is that you light only one (1) candle for all your prayers on a Sunday. This accords with tradition and helps us to stay within our budget. We are also grateful for any contributions that you wish to make specifically to the candle budget via venmo (@stbsnashville) with "candles" as a note. (Payments made through Venmo are not tax-deductible.)

We remember this week, the Rev. James Lawson, who was a central figure in the Nashville civil rights movement and who died on Monday, June 10 at age 95. As a Vanderbilt Divinity student, he trained civil rights leaders like Diane Nash, Bernard Lafayette and John Lewis, conducting non-violence workshops. He was expelled from Vanderbilt after leading the sit-ins in downtown Nashville protesting segregation. Lawson's students played a leading role in the Freedom Rides, the March on Washington, Freedom Summer, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, the Children's Crusade in Birmingham, the Voting Rights Movement and many other civil rights actions from 1958 to the present.
Eternal Lord God, you hold all souls in life: Give to your whole Church in paradise and on earth your light and your peace; and grant that we, following the good examples of those who have served you here and are now at rest, may at the last enter with them into your unending joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. —BCP pg. 253
