The Broadway Tunnel will fully close for ONE day on Sunday, Aug. 16, before the project begins an approximately 14-month partial closure with one lane open in each direction.
- Mid-September: Crews are expected to begin sewer line replacement on Walter U. Lum Place, requiring roadway trenching and a temporary street closure.

Upcoming construction activities and traffic impacts: |
FULL CLOSURE | AUG. 16, 7 a.m. – AUG. 17, 5 a.m.

During the full closure, crews will restripe roadways, install traffic control devices and install protective decking above Broadway on the east side of the tunnel during construction.

PHASE A PARTIAL CLOSURE | STARTING AUG. 17

Following the full closure, the south-side bore (eastbound) will close for approximately 7 months, with the north-side bore (westbound) carrying one lane of traffic in each direction.
- The north-side bore will then close for approximately 7 months, with the south bore carrying one lane in each direction.

Expect traffic delays during peak travel times. Drivers who want to avoid delays can use the local and regional detour routes established for the full closure.

Activities in September 2026 |
- Hazardous materials abatement and related work will begin inside the closed tunnel bore.
- Interior hazardous materials abatement will continue inside the building.
- Structural demolition and window removal will continue inside the building.
- Sidewalk and structural demolition will begin inside the closed tunnel bore.
- Precast facade panel removal will begin on the west and east sides of the building.

Structural steel work will begin for the building façade.
- Utility investigation work on Mason Street and the south Broadway tributary.

As of Aug. 14, the Kearny Street pedestrian bridge has been fully demolished, and the traffic has returned to normal.
This exciting milestone helps open up the heart of Chinatown, creating clearer views, brighter streets and a stronger connection between Portsmouth Square, nearby businesses and the surrounding neighborhood.

8月14日,乾尼街 (Kearny Street) 行人天橋已完成拆除，交通亦已全面恢復正常。

Upcoming construction activities and traffic impacts: |
Sewer line replacement work is expected to take place on Walter U. Lum Place in mid-September. Crews will perform trenching in the roadway to access and replace the sewer line.
A temporary road closure, traffic changes, construction noises and parking restrictions are expected near the work area. Confirmed dates and work hours will be shared once finalized.

Join the project team on the second Friday of each month at 10:00 a.m. at the corner of Walter U. Lum Place and Washington Street. Get construction updates, ask questions, and share feedback.
Interpretation services will be available in Chinese at all office hours. For other language services or accessibility requests, please contact Noah Levy, project manager, at noah.levy@sfgov.org at least 48 hours before the meeting. Late requests will be honored if possible.
