2024 Harvest Strategy Thoughts - Corn For Silage
Whole plant corn silage moistures are starting to trickle into the optimum range for harvest going into most silage structures. Monitoring moisture levels in individual fields will be key to proper harvest and storage this season, with huge variability within fields and across farms due to challenging planting conditions. Pair that with drier weather and we may be surprised where our plant moistures are.

NRCS is Accepting Applications from Producers & Landowners for teh Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)

USDA is accepting applications from agricultural producers and forest landowners from Wisconsin for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), which offers producers financial and technical assistance to address resource concerns on their land. Wisconsin producers and landowners should apply by early November(date to be announced soon) to be considered for funding for the 2025 cycle.

EQIP offers agricultural producers financial and technical assistance to producers. EQIP offers conservation practices to help producers make improvements, including enhancing water and air quality, conserving ground and surface water, reducing soil erosion and sedimentation, or enhancing wildlife habitat.

NRCS provides financial assistance for a wide variety of conservation practices through EQIP, but availability and amount of financial assistance can vary.

New Concepts in Colostrum Feeding for Dairy Calves
Dairy producers should consider feeding a smaller volume of colostrum to newborn calves. Delivering the correct mass of immunoglobulin in a smaller volume ensures the successful transfer of passive immunity (TPI) is preferable to current colostrum feeding guidelines. Feeding too large a volume of colostrum can cause serious complications that affect the health and well-being of newborn calves.
