Dear Campus Community,

The Colket Center for Academic Excellence is excited to announce two updates to our academic support offerings.

First, the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Center is now the Spatial Literacy Center (SLC).

This change represents the broadening of geospatial support across the disciplines. The SLC combines cognitive mapping, spatial visualization, and the interpretation of data—such as maps or charts—to solve problems and navigate both physical and abstract environments. The Center will still offer GIS and drone support.

The SLC will serve as a campus-wide resource for students, faculty, and staff to integrate spatial thinking into their own unique curricula, research, and creative projects. The SLC aims to make geospatial technology accessible to all and advance spatial literacy across the disciplines.

The Spatial Literacy Center and the Helen and Arthur E. Johnson GIS Lab are located on the first floor of Tutt Library.

Second, we are excited to welcome Krista West, PhD, as the inaugural director of the Spatial Literacy Center.

Dr. West is an interdisciplinary geographer and remote sensing scientist with twenty years of expertise spanning academia, industry, and government.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. West to campus.

We are excited to add Spatial Literacy to our support offerings, alongside the Ruth Barton Writing Center, Quantitative Reasoning Center (QRC), Speaking Center, and Office of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Education, to offer robust, year-round academic support for students.
