Located on the Melanesian South Field of the Asia-Pacific Region, the island nation of Papua New Guinea (PNG) has 22 provinces, some of which are so remote that they are only accessible by air. Before gaining its independence from Australia in 1975, PNG had known a long history of complex foreign rule; a divided nation under German, British, and Australian governance. PNG is noted to be one of the world’s most linguistically diverse nations, boasting 839 languages. The work of the Church of the Nazarene officially started in 1955. Ten of the 17 districts are accessible by road, and seven districts by air. Present in all 22 provinces, the Church of the Nazarene is noted for its superb work through the Kudjip Nazarene Hospital and the Nazarene College of Nursing. In a country where the majority of the population has limited educational background, with an estimated half of the population under the age of 25 years, the Church of the Nazarene is committed to an educational enterprise that can change communities with the Good News of Jesus and the professional development of those who would serve those communities.

Nazarene College of Nursing Students Making a Difference
Thanks to the generous contributions to the Nazarene College of Nursing (NCON) in Papua New Guinea, some exciting developments are significantly impacting the lives of students and the wider community. The Nazarene College of Nursing Greatest Need Fund is an initiative that is making a real difference. Along with World Evangelism Fund (WEF) giving, this and other programs of the Nazarene General Hospital at Kudjip, PNG, are made possible.
Recent support has empowered the college in several important ways. Notably, the funding facilitated essential upgrades and replacement parts for the computer lab, ensuring that students have access to the latest technology. It also covered NCON’s internet charges, allowing students to access vital research resources crucial for their education.
Looking ahead, this support will play a key role in facilitating the attendance of the deputy principal at the upcoming Asia-Pacific Regional Conference to enhance skills development and capacity-building in leadership. This opportunity not only benefits the deputy principal but also strengthens the overall educational experience for students. Nursing college students regularly volunteer to go to local churches and lead worship and preach, followed by a public health session conducted with the local community.

As a result of these efforts, students are graduating, equipped with the skills and passion to share Christ’s love with their patients and the community. The work being done at NCON exemplifies the dedication of Nazarenes engaged in God’s mission, transforming lives through education and spiritual development.
The contributions to the Greatest Need Fund highlight the importance of partnership in advancing God’s work. The impact of this initiative extends far beyond financial support; it fosters a collaborative spirit that empowers individuals to make a difference. Together, we are creating a brighter future for the next generation of healthcare professionals in Papua New Guinea.
