Common Data Elements (CDEs)
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) is offering a live training: Standardize Your Research with the NIH Common Data Element Repository (CDE-R) on Thursday, December 12, 2024, from 12:00-1:30pm CT. Register to attend or receive the recording after the event.

Grants Applications and Reporting
An extramural NEXUS post provides a reminder about the ‘multiple changes affecting extramural applications and review for application due dates on or after January 25, 2025’. For example, for NIH and AHRQ grant applications, FORMS-I Grant Application Forms and Instructions must be used for due dates on or after January 25, 2025. The NEXUS post provides links to the changes.

Institutional Biosafety
An update on the NIH’s implementation of the OSTP DURC/PEPP Policy was provided in the October Council on Governmental Relations (COGR) meeting. The research community is advised that additional information and direction will be provided by the UIC Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) in the coming months to assist PIs in determining if their work could be defined as DURC.

Responsible Conduct of Research
Next month’s Responsible of Conduct of Research (RCR) Workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, December 10, 2024, from 11:30am – 12:30pm in B8 PHARM (Basement, College of Pharmacy building), located at 833 South Wood Street on the West Campus. Sandra De Groote, Professor and Head, Scholarly Communications, UIC Library, will be presenting on ‘Updates on SciENcv Biosketches and ORCID IDs’. A light lunch will be provided, please be sure to register and cancel your registration if you are unable to attend.
Dr. Mike Lauer’s extramural NEXUS post provided an “Update on Linking ORCID To Implement Persistent Identifier Requirements While Reducing Burden and Improving Transparency’. He concluded the post by encouraging the research community to obtain an ORCID ID ‘before they are required for Common Forms in May 2025.

Research Security
The Department of Energy (DoE) issued a new Financial Assistance Letter (FAL) addressing DOE’s implementation of research security training requirements. Anyone who “contributes in a substantive, meaningful way to the development or execution of the scope of work of a project” must complete research security training and document the training in applications submitted after May 2025. The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research will be announcing, in early 2025, a policy and the procedures for meeting the research security training requirements.

NIH Fellowship Applications
An updated NIH reference letter instruction guide is provided to those applying for fellowship and career development award applications.
Graduate students or postdocs who are planning on applying for an NIH fellowship in 2025 are encouraged to visit the website on the Information on the changes for the ‘Sponsors of Candidates’.
