Allan Saxe petting a dog

In remembrance

In a statement expressing her condolences UTA President Jennifer Cowley wrote, "For nearly six decades, Allan Saxe has been a Maverick institution—one of our best known and most beloved professors. He was engaging, smart, funny, and opinionated, and his classes were considered can’t miss by generations of UT Arlington students. He was so popular that when our university magazine asked Mavericks a few years ago to share their favorite Allan Saxe memories, hundreds of alumni submitted entries. His legacy of overwhelming generosity and kindness is visible across our campus and our region—with parks, gardens, softball fields, patios, and traffic circles bearing his name. My condolences go out to his family and friends—of which he had many. We at UT Arlington are forever grateful that he made our campus his professional home for 54 years.”

Julian Rodriguez, broadcast journalism specialist in the Department of Communication

Meet a Maverick

When he was a graduate student associate at UTA in 2007, Julian Rodriguez identified an opportunity to increase bilingual media education in the United States. After graduating with a master’s degree in communication, Rodriguez became a full-time faculty member in 2008 and then founded what has grown to be known as the UTA Hispanic Media Initiative (HMI), a program with a 100% graduation and job placement rate.

HMI alumni have earned over 100 Regional Emmy Awards. Rodriguez attributes the success of the program to hands-on training in bilingual media, private and public partnerships, and mentorship. “As an educator, you have to find the trigger that moves the student. Then you can help move them in that direction,” he says. “They start walking by themselves, and all you do is make sure that they are supported as they continue to explore their interests.” Rodriguez enjoys finding new ways for HMI students to strengthen industry relationships by traveling for presentations and conferences, such as the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Conference that HMI attends yearly.

During his time at UTA, Rodriguez has embraced the freedom granted by the University and the Department of Communication to pursue his research, which most recently involved traveling to the Caribbean, Colombia, Southern Argentina, and Antarctica to document climate change in partnership with The Weather Channel en Español.

“Julian Rodriguez is an amazing professor, mentor, and trailblazer, who creates opportunities for students’ talent to grow,” says Michele Bobadilla, senior associate vice president of outreach and community engagement and assistant provost of Hispanic Student Success.
