Dear Alumni and Friends,

Sixty years ago, Cleveland State University was established and became Ohio's seventh state university. Since then, CSU has defined itself as the public research university of Cleveland. The University has grown its campus into a living, bustling neighborhood. And we have seen generations of students gain the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.

This year, we will celebrate our history and the people that added to the legacy of CSU. As president, I have had the chance to meet many people who contributed to our success, but there are many more stories to be told. I look forward to hearing them as I visit with alumni and friends of CSU throughout the year.

I did have the good fortune to get to know and learn from President Emeritus Michael Schwartz, who sadly passed away a few weeks ago. Dr. Schwartz left his mark on two Northeast Ohio universities: CSU and Kent State University. To recognize his legacy on both institutions, we will be co-hosting a Celebration of Life next month. More information is available on our website.

Student Belonging and Success at CSU

At the start of this academic year, we announced the creation of the Division of Student Belonging and Success. This new structure focuses on providing an environment and services that ensure our students feel healthy, settled, safe and connected at CSU. A student's connection — to groups like student organizations, academic departments or student support programs — is an essential resource as they earn their degree.

CSU Law Students Become Animal Advocates

Starting this month, students in the CSU College of Law can take classes in the David H. Braff Animal Law Center and Clinic, the first of its kind for a law school in the state. Students in the Center will have hands-on learning opportunities to pursue the humane and ethical treatment of animals.

CSU Named One of Nation's Best Employers for Veterans

Forbes recently released their list of America's Best Employers for Veterans, a list of 150 employers based on data provided directly by veterans. We are proud that CSU is named on this list, #41 overall and #2 among educational institutions.

The State of Higher Education in America

The Great Upheaval is a particularly interesting look at the state of colleges and universities in the United States. Of course, many other scholars are examining higher education's trajectory, but few provide insight using examples from other industries that have undergone radical change or by examining our own past.
