Orange County Government Winter Holiday Closings and Service Alterations

Orange County Government will be closed on Thursday, Jan.1, 2026, for the New Year’s holiday. Please note the following closings and exceptions:

  • Solid Waste: No recycling collection on Jan. 1, 2026, and for the remainder of the week recycling collection will be delayed by one day. The Landfill/Disposal Centers, Waste and Recycling Centers, and Administrative Office will be closed.
  • Animal Services: Will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026. They ask that, as always, people call 9-1-1 if they have an animal-related emergency when they are closed, such as animal bites to humans or exposure to rabies.
  • 9-1-1 Services: Will be available. Please only call 9-1-1 to report emergencies.
  • Library: The Orange County Public Library and the Southern Branch Library in Carrboro will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026.

Apply now to join the cohort of the 2026 Orange County Government Academy, a comprehensive program giving residents an inside look at how county government works. The program begins Wednesday, Feb. 25, and concludes with a graduation ceremony on Tuesday, April 21, at the Whitted Human Services Center in Hillsborough.

Commissioner Sally Greene to Serve on the North Carolina Historical Commission

Commissioner Sally Greene to Serve on the North Carolina Historical Commission

Governor Josh Stein has appointed Commissioner Sally Greene to the North Carolina Historical Commission. Commissioner Greene is a lawyer, historian, and Orange County Commissioner who has written extensively about North Carolina’s 19th-century legal history.

The North Carolina Historical Commission is an 11-member board that advocates for the relevance of the state’s history to contemporary life. It sets policies for historical preservation and approves memorials, statues, and historical items on state property, while advising the state on preserving historic sites and records.

Commissioner Greene will serve a six-year term.
