Last week a pedestrian was struck by a passing vehicle on University Drive West while crossing the street from the West Garage. We extend our best wishes to this member of our university community.
As the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors is our highest priority and in light of this incident, the university is reviewing and will evaluate the precautions and prevention efforts around the crosswalk between the West Garage and the Service and Supply Building. There will be an increased public safety presence on University Drive West. Additionally, we ask that you please take a moment to review the following roadway safety reminders.
Driver Safety Tips
- Observe Speed Limits: Please do not exceed the maximum campus speed limit of 25 mph, and slow down in high-traffic areas, especially near crosswalks.
- Yield to Pedestrians: Remember that pedestrians have the right of way at crosswalks. Stop and allow them to cross safely.
- Avoid Distractions: Keep your focus on the road and avoid texting or using your phone while driving.
Pedestrian Safety Tips
- Use Designated Crosswalks: Cross only at marked crosswalks and wait for traffic to stop before stepping off the curb. Even when in a crosswalk, be cautious and check both ways for approaching vehicles.
- Stay Alert: Avoid distractions like cell phones or headphones when crossing the street. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
We are committed to maintaining a safe campus environment and appreciate your attention to this matter.
