Interfaith Social Justice Journey to Montgomery, Alabama Recap
| |
January 22, 2023
On Sunday, January 22, 2023, about 50 members of the Emory community traveled to Montgomery, AL as participants in an Interfaith Social Justice trip to the Equal Justice Initiative Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. This journey was planned by a committee of the Emory Inter-Religious Council and OSRL as part of our mission to foster interfaith dialogue on campus.
The museum traces the history of slavery and its implications through history to the present day, including Reconstruction, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights Movement, and mass incarceration, and the memorial is a monument to people who have been murdered by racist terror lynching between 1877 and 1950. The journey was a profoundly impactful experience, spiritually and emotionally, and a unique opportunity to connect interfaith dialogue and action with learning and work for social justice.

Andy Rotman of Smith College on "The Vow that Began the Buddha’s Path to Awakening"
Sunday, January 29, 2:00-3:00 p.m. Ackerman Hall and Zoom
The Buddha’s life story is generally said to begin at a moment other than his birth as Prince Gautama. Instead, it began many eons ago, during a previous lifetime, when as a learned brahman he vowed before the Buddha Dipankara that he, too, would one day become a Buddha. This story is one of the most famous in the Buddhist world, immortalized in Buddhist literature and art, especially in sculptures from the first centuries CE from the northwest region of the Indian subcontinent, then known as Gandhara. In the lecture, Andy Rotman, Sydenham Clark Parsons Professor in the Department of Religion at Smith College, will discuss the reasons that this story was so popular and what it tells us about the Buddha’s biography.
