Missionary Journey – Joyce Tempel

“No one I knew had any idea how to help me answer this call from God,” says Joyce Tempel. For her, the excitement of being called into missions was coupled with uncertainty. How would this young teen from Brazil find her way to the missions field?
The journey from calling to deployment can feel overwhelming not only for the missionary but also for the missionary’s family, friends, and mentors. That is why Joyce is so passionate about her role today, in which she gets to help others answer God’s call.

As the Global Missions Mobilization coordinator for the Church of the Nazarene, Joyce works alongside and coordinates a global team of regional mobilization coordinators who help identify, encourage, prepare, and walk with missionary candidates through the mobilization process. She says, “We often describe mobilization as a sacred journey with people from the moment they first show interest in missions until they have a placement. Our role is to prayerfully walk alongside them as they discern God’s call, navigate the missionary process, prepare for service, and stay connected every step of the way.”

Of course, these coordinators need help to cover regions that span numerous countries, languages, and cultures. That’s why Mobilization works closely with Nazarene Missions International. Joyce shares, “Mobilization and NMI work hand in hand. NMI helps nurture a spirit of missions and mobilize believers into action, while Mobilization walks alongside those discerning God’s call by inspiring, equipping, and preparing them for service. There is beautiful synergy in the work we do together — these are not parallel efforts, but interconnected ministries that strengthen one another.”

- Pray that God will encourage NMI volunteers to boldly walk alongside those who are called and help them connect with Nazarene Missions Mobilization.

- Praise God for guiding the steps of each person he calls.
