I hope everyone is having a great start to the semester. As we approach the middle of fall semester, I wanted to give you all a brief update as well as alert you to some of our upcoming fall events. 

Over the last few weeks, I have hosted a series of feedback sessions, during which we have reviewed a logic model which outlines the basis for a global strategy. As noted in the sessions, my goal was to get feedback on our overarching goal for the internationalization/globalization of campus and curriculum as well as the benchmarks to evaluate if we are effectively working towards our goals. I enjoyed these sessions immensely. Each group was different – focusing on different parts of the logic model, providing new resources and perspectives, and identifying different opportunities and barriers. This process confirmed for me that we have a wealth of international and global knowledge on campus, and that we have dedicated and passionate faculty and staff across campus. A big thank you to all who participated! If you didn’t get a chance to participate but want to review the logic model and provide feedback, I welcome that. The new International Studies major in Center for International Studies received final approval from the Ohio Department of Education at the end of August. With this new streamlined major, students choose one regional focus and one transregional theme. Congratulations to Josh Hill and the CIS team! 

The African Student Union had a fabulous African Night celebration this past weekend. It was such an affirming and positive evening celebrating the cultures of Africa. ASU and others have posted great photos and videos on Instagram. Thanks to the ASU Executive Committee and ASU Advisor, Uzoma Miller. 

Congratulations to Morgan Ceferatti, Geoff Dabelko, Emily Englehart, Linda Johnson, Melissa Kulp, and Jamie Lambert who received the CIBED Global Access Awards recently. Also highlighted were alumni Brian and Kerry Ballinger and Carolyn Balogh. 

Last week, the College of Business welcomed executives from Brazil for leadership and professional development programs. These programs are under the direction of Gabe Giordano.  

OPIE welcomed 132 students into their intensive English programs, 31 from Chubu. Thanks to Director, Gerry Krzic and Assistant Director, Becky Challenger.  

Letitia Price, Assistant Director of the Ohio Women’s Center was highlighted in Ohio News. She participated in the Empowering New Voices through Education and Sports Training program in Rwanda where she explored gender equity and women’s health.  

Congratulations to Haley Duschinski for her recent publication “The Palgrave Handbook of New Directions in Kashmiri Studies” (co-edited with Mona Bhan and Cabeiri DeBergh Robinson.)  

Starting this Thursday (tomorrow!), I am hosting “Cookies and Conversation” every 1st Thursday of the month at 4:00 p.m. This is a casual gathering with students to talk about various global themes. Send your students to the 3rd floor of Yamada House for some of my homemade cookies.  

We are getting excited for International Education Week (IEW) this year. The National IEW Theme is Open for Opportunity. The celebration on campus will start early with the International Dinner on November 4th. The theme of the dinner is: Cultural Fusion: One Plate, Many Stories. The full program for IEW is from November 13-19. This year, we will have several events to celebrate our 50th anniversary of partnership with Chubu University.  

Other events are happening throughout the week- Starting Monday, November 13, Friends of India is sponsoring a Sand Mandala Construction by the Tashi Kyil Monastery in Baker Center. We will also host a workshop on Thursday, November 16, entitled “Building Academic International Partnerships: Connecting Cultures, Enhancing Education and Partnering in Research”.  On Friday, November 17, we will have the 2nd Annual IEW Student Global Research Symposium with a Rapid Presentation Thesis Competition. Please encourage your students to submit their work. If you’re willing to serve as a judge, please let us know! The Alumni Association is hosting “Global Tastes and Alumni Insights: An Open House for International Education Week” on Thursday, November 16.  We are still building the schedule in partnership with colleges and units across campus and will release a full schedule soon. Please consider adding an International/global event by tagging the event with OHIOIEW2023 and letting us know so we can help promote.
