Climate Commitment Annual Report Highlights Duke Progress on Climate Research and Sustainability

The Duke University Climate Commitment recently released its 2024 annual report highlighting key achievements, including the university's attainment of carbon neutrality and the launch of nearly 70 climate initiatives in the past year. Duke has also developed an interdisciplinary framework for climate education and invested $3.7 million in seed grants to support research on climate resilience and environmental justice. External engagement efforts, such as the Billions to Trillions Summit and new community partnerships, further reinforce Duke's commitment to impactful climate solutions.

A New Platform to Build Stronger Community Partnerships

Duke University has launched the new Partnership Platform, designed to improve collaboration between Duke and Durham communities. The platform connects Duke faculty, staff, students and alumni with local organizations for volunteer opportunities, community engagement, and sustainable partnerships. Developed in response to the Duke and Durham Today and Tomorrow Task Force's recommendations, it aims to streamline outreach, enhance visibility and measure the impact of community initiatives. The platform also features tools like the LearnHub for shared learning, a data dashboard for community health insights and community mapping capabilities to support informed decision-making and strengthen partnerships.

New $10 million Gift to Expand Work of Duke Law’s Bolch Judicial Institute

Duke University has received a $10 million gift from RaceTrac to expand the Bolch Judicial Institute at Duke Law School, which advances judicial independence and the rule of law. The donation honors the legacy of RaceTrac’s chairman emeritus, Carl Bolch Jr., and his wife Susan Bass Bolch, who initially established the Institute in 2018 with a $10 million gift. This new funding will expand the Institute’s international programs, enhance domestic civic education and support current offerings such as the Master of Laws program for judges. The gift is also a matching donation, encouraging the growth of the Institute’s endowment and ensuring its continued impact on judicial education and public trust in the legal system.
