Get ready to “Read Your Hearts Out” with JG Read-A-Thon!

What is Read-a-Thon?
Read-a-Thon (RAT) is an 11-day, school-wide reading marathon and fundraiser for Julia Green. It is a fun way to encourage the love and importance of reading while improving our student’s literacy skills! RAT funds more than one-third of the budget for Julia Green’s Parent Teacher Organization. This year, Read-A-Thon begins February 3rd and ends February 13th.

What happens during the 11-day marathon?
Many exciting and fun things will happen during RAT! Some of these include a kick-off assembly, mystery guest readers, a book cover contest, favorite book character day, and the closing ceremony where prizes and special recognitions will happen! All students will receive a booklet to record their reading in and some grade levels will transfer their logs into Beanstack. More detailed information will come home with your child in the coming weeks.

What are the incentives for students?
There are 3 Club levels that students can reach, depending on how much reading they have done. All students will earn the same prize on the 3 counting days and all students will be given a small prize at the closing ceremony. There will be a prize for the top 2 readers for each grade level, the book cover contest winner and the Hornet Heart award (4th graders only).

February 2: RAT T-shirts go home with students who preordered
February 3: Opening Ceremony during school day / RAT Booklets go home with students / *RAT begins at 3:30pm*
February 5: Parnassus Books event, 4-6pm
February 7: Counting Day #1-students bring booklets to school
February 10: Dress as your Favorite Book Character Day / Counting Day #2-students bring booklets to school
February 13: Book cover contest submissions due / *RAT Ends at 8:00pm*
February 14: Counting Day #2-students bring booklets to school
February 15: Teacher Appreciation Dinner
February 16: Hornet Heart essays due for 4th graders
February 17: Closing Ceremony during school day

Selma Tornado Relief

Our hearts go out to our neighbors in Selma, Alabama in the wake of the devastating tornado on January 12th.

If you are looking for ways to support relief efforts, please consider purchasing items from this wishlist, which is being updated daily based on community needs. Items will be organized and dispersed among coordinated relief efforts on the ground in Selma.

A huge shout out to Celeste Hemingway and Jennifer Perman for coordinating and designing the JG field trip t-shirts! Thanks to your hard work and creativity our students are able to showcase their JG pride to the community when wearing them throughout the year.

We are also so thankful our super star Library volunteer Lindsay Tahiry! She comes in several days a week to help with first grade and kindergarten checkout and is such a big help to the library team and students each time she comes.
