Office of Spiritual and Religious Life
Rev. Maddie Henderson
Greetings Friends,
Life at Emory University is back in full swing. Students are excited to be back in person for classes and cocurriculars, and they are engaging with the Office of Spiritual and Religious Life (OSRL) even more than in recent years as they settle into their fall semester rhythms.
In August, forty students participated in our interfaith pre-orientation program, WISE (Welcoming Interfaith and Spiritual Exploration). Students visited and learned at various religious sites throughout the week, including Ebenezer Baptist Church, Glenn Memorial UMC, the University Catholic Center, and Bread Coffeehouse. We also had the opportunity to tour the birth home of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After an inspiring first week at Emory, these students are staying connected to OSRL through the Emory Edge course, which I am co-teaching this semester with our Hindu Chaplain Brni. Shweta Chaitanya. The students are a joy.

Our Beloved Community Sunday worship is also in full swing. We have witnessed many new students joining our community and wanting to help lead the service too. I am particularly grateful for our new Candler Con Ed Intern Kamilah Jones for the gifts and graces she brings. On Homecoming and Family Sunday, October 23, The Rev. Deborah M. Nutt 99B will preach, and on All Saints’ Sunday October 30, The Rev. Chebon Kernell, Director of the UMC's Indigenous Ministries, will preach. You are always welcome to join us in person, and you can also view past services on OSRL’s Youtube page.
I hope that you will join us back on campus for Homecoming 2022 on October 20-23. There are many events, including Beloved Community worship and lunch on October 23 at 11:00 a.m. in Cannon Chapel. Please also come visit us on Saturday, October 22 from Noon-5:30 p.m. at the OSRL Affinity Tent on the main quad. See our full schedule of programs here.
There are three ways in which I invite you to support OSRL and Christian Life on campus: First, we always ask for your prayers for the Emory University community and particularly our students. Pray that they will find community and support during their time at Emory, that they will know they are loved.
Second, I invite you to consider giving to the OSRL Christian Life Fund especially on Thursday, November 3 as part of Emory Giving Week. Your support allows us to invite inspiring guests to preach, offer students nourishing meals on Sunday after worship, and provide opportunities to participate and learn leadership in ministry. I offer thanks in advance for your consideration.
Third, if you are local, please come to Emory’s Muscogee Nation Teach-In on Friday, October 28 from 2:30-5:00 pm on the Academic Quad. This event is part of Emory’s broader work to build connections with and walk together with the Muscogee Nation, and it will be an opportunity to learn from members of the Nation about their culture today. You can learn more about this event and RSVP here.

Blessings to you in this fall season.
Best wishes,
Rev. Maddie Henderson
