A multi-university team led by Kayunta Johnson-Winters, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, has received funding from the National Science Foundation to increase the number of underrepresented STEM faculty within the University of Texas System by mentoring advanced doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty through the tenure and promotion process.

Electronic cigarette use, or vaping, has been seen as a potentially less harmful alternative to traditional cigarette smoking. New research from Ziyad Ben Taleb, assistant professor in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation, says that vaping use is just as harmful to the body as cigarette smoking.

Prepare for the All Majors Job & Internship Fair

The fall 2023 All Majors Job & Internship Fair is Wednesday, Sept. 20, 12-4 p.m. in the Maverick Activities Center. More than 150 employers are expected to attend.

Maverick Speakers Series presents “A Conversation with LeVar Burton” Thursday, Oct. 5, at 7:30 p.m. Burton, perhaps best known for his 26-year run as host of the beloved PBS classic Reading Rainbow, also originated the iconic role of Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
He continues to advocate for reading and exercises his love for storytelling in a variety of formats, including literacy-focused apps, books, podcasts, and film. Admission is free for faculty, staff, and students.

| Research and study abroad
|
Applications are open for the LSAMP Summer Research Academy Abroad. The program selects up to 10 students from LSAMP partner schools for extended study abroad. Students receive a $4,000 stipend, roundtrip airfare, and an allowance for housing and food.

| Professional Skills Academy
|
The Professional Skills Academy (PSA) is a chance to learn more about the career competencies expected by today's employers, such as communication, leadership, teamwork, and more. Attend four seminars during the month of October and earn your PSA certificate. Apply by Tuesday, Oct. 3.
