GVSU Intergenerational Partnership with Samaritas
This year’s first ever intergenerational experience student from Grand Valley State University is Kayla Gacioch. While participating in the program, Kayla lives at Samaritas with free room, board, and meals. Kayla spends eight to ten hours per week with the senior residents. She volunteers, participates at events, and even shares meals and conversations with residents. This helps to connect the residents with their community while giving Kayla a meaningful experience in a program that brings generations together—an intergenerational partnership open to students at Grand Valley State University who are studying health as a profession.
Samaritas Senior Living is now accepting applications for the Fall 2023 - Spring 2024 intergenerational program. It encourages GVSU health profession students to apply by the March 20, 2023 deadline by writing a letter to the residents of Samaritas discussing why they want to be part of this experience. A panel of residents and leaders will decide which students are accepted. You can download the full intergenerational program description and application process here. For more information, contact Bcova@samaritas.org
"We are looking for students who are interested in immersing themselves in a vibrant senior community. Intergenerational engagement provides significant benefits for connecting residents to the broader community, enhancing well-being for both youth and older adults, reducing ageism, reducing isolation, and preparing an aging workforce."
Public Health expanding its reach in the UP
Public Health is pleased to announce its newest partnership in northern Michigan with Lake Superior State University. This winter, a new articulation agreement was signed, allowing undergraduate students from LSSU to consider applying to the
Master of Public Health program through an organized direct admission process.
This is an expansion for the public health program in underserved, rural areas of the UP, having also been in partnership with Northern Michigan University since 2019.

Direct admission for both partner institutions allows for the recruitment of students who attend LSSU or NMU in health-related professions meet the admissions criteria, and have been recommended by their advisors.

GVSU looks forward to training the next generation of public health professionals serving the Upper Peninsula of Michigan!

Community & Student Engagement

MLS Students attend Legislative Symposium in Lansing

Medical laboratory Science (MLS) students and faculty members attended the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) legislative symposium at the State Capital in Lansing.
Medical laboratory Science (MLS) students and three faculty members from the College of Health Professions attended the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) legislative symposium at the State Capital in Lansing, Michigan, on September 22. The students listened to speakers discuss state and national legislative efforts impacting the field of MLS and gained knowledge about the importance of their voices in the legislative arena. As soon-to-be future laboratory professionals, they also learned "protocols" on how to best engage their government officials to influence them to make decisions that positively impact their chosen profession.
They also attended a Michigan House of Representatives session in the State Capital building in order to see the Michigan legislative process in action and were recognized as a group of young MLS professionals by Kevin Cotter, the Speaker of the House. Coincidentally, they met with another group of Michigan students that suffer from Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcus (PANDAS), who was also visiting the Capital on that day. This group was present to garner awareness for their rare disorder and was very surprised to learn that our MLS students were aware of this disease. PANDAS, an under-recognized and rarely understood infection, is characterized by OCD behaviors, including motor tics, and is caused by a prior bacterial infection with Streptococcus organisms.
Our MLS students made us proud with their willingness to engage and share with these young people what they had learned at Grand Valley in their microbiology course!

Spotlight on Traverse City Pre-PAS Experience

The Traverse City Regional Center's website features two videos spotlighting GVSU Pre-PA students, David Buchanan and Justin Smith, each sharing their rural experience in Traverse City.
Spotlight on David Buchanan, Pre-PAS Student

David Buchanan, GVSU Allied Health Sciences major

Coming from Jamaica three years ago and now enrolled in the Pre-PA program in Traverse City, David Buchanan is establishing himself in this rural community. "Here at the Traverse City Regional Center, we are able to do hybrid learning and it has not only given us an idea of healthcare but also an idea of how to interact with various patients. Grand Valley State University has allowed me to be able to not only pursue my career, but being able to play my role as an employee, a husband, a father while still being able to enrich my community."
Spotlight on Justin Smith, PAS student

Justin Smith, GVSU Physician Assistant Studies

Being from Northern Michigan and after earning his undergraduate degree in Allied Health Sciences from Grand Valley, "it was perfect" for Justin Smith that Grand Valley offered the PAS program in Traverse City. "Just being able to be here, learning how to practice rural healthcare because it is different than having a lot of resources in a big city, is really important to me. "

What's New at CHP?

CHP's Combined Degree Programs Empower Students
The College of Health Professions provides several combined degree programs that empower students to complete a graduate degree quicker, with an expedited pathway for them to serve communities. Combined degree programs typically allow a student to count up to 12 credits to be applied towards both the bachelor’s degree and the master’s degree, resulting in less time to complete the degrees so they can prepare and integrate themselves into their chosen health profession. Current combined degree offerings that include one or more programs in the College of Health Professions are:
Jenny Baweja named AHS Interim Program Director

Respirator Fit Testing collaboration keeps
Students in Clinical Placements
The pandemic changed the healthcare landscape on many levels, including the widespread use of N-95 respirators to protect healthcare workers from airborne pathogens such as COVID-19. Limited resources led to healthcare partners requesting GVSU along with other universities to facilitate fit testing clinics for students in clinical settings where N-95 use was required. GVSU's health compliance office, Occupational Safety and Health Management under the direction of Dave Huizen, PhD., CIH, and GVSU Family Health Center providers collaborated to coordinate, evaluate, and complete student respirator fit testing. Further, the GVSU Simulation Center purchased and stored N-95 respirators to issue to students when placement sites were unable to provide them. This collaboration allowed health profession students to continue clinical placements and occupational health and safety students to learn respirator fit testing procedures.
