Homeless World Cup at Sac State wraps up with soccer, celebrations
Over nearly 400 matches, some 500 formerly homeless athletes from around the globe showed Sacramento and the world the meaning of resilience as they competed in the Homeless World Cup street soccer tournament, which held its final games and closing ceremony at Sacramento State on July 15.
The event brought together a worldwide community of soccer enthusiasts, leaders, and community members to build empathy for those who have struggled with housing insecurity and find solutions to the global problem.
“This is about changing the conversation around homelessness,” said outgoing Sac State President Robert S. Nelsen, who officially retired following the conclusion of the tournament.
