Honoring the enduring legacy and contributions of Filipino Americans in shaping U.S. healthcare and medical education. From the arrival of Filipino sailors in 1587 to the waves of nurses, physicians, and educators who transformed patient care and public health, this month celebrates a rich tradition of healing, advocacy, and resilience.

HEALTH EQUITY MINUTE

Did You Know?

While Filipinos comprise only 1% of the U.S. population, they make up 4% of the nursing workforce? Their growth in this specialty dates back to the end of the 19th century when, due to U.S. colonization of the Philippines, Filipinos were permitted to become U.S. nationals and train under the U.S. Army as nurses.

Loretta Ross

Activist, Public Intellectual, Professor

Loretta J. Ross is an activist, public intellectual, scholar, the 2022 recipient of the MacArthur Foundation "Genius" award and an Associate Professor at Smith College. She has a passion for innovating creative imagining about global human rights and social justice issues and started her career in activism and social change in the 1970s.
