The Eyes Have It: Cox Media Group (CMG) is selling its Tulsa radio cluster, including KWEN, to Zoellner Media Group. The newly-formed company is headed by longtime Tulsa optometrist Dr. Robert H. Zoellner, who is said to have "built his businesses on the power of radio advertising and has long championed the value of local broadcast radio." Former Griffin/Tulsa Dir./Radio Operations Steve Hunter joins Zoellner as Pres./GM. Prior to his six years with Griffin, Hunter spent almost 22 as Dir./Operations at CMG/Tulsa (CAT 9/27/22). Reach him here. The sale, which also includes News-Talk KRMG-AM-FM, AC KRAV and Classic Rock KJSR, is expected to close early in Q3.

7 Mountains/Parkersburg, WV MM Bob Lawrence joins MacDonald Broadcasting as MM for its Saginaw, MI cluster, including WKCQ, effective June 2. Lawrence departed 7 Mountains last week (CAT 5/13). Prior jobs include GM/National Radio Talent at the

Tornado Response: About half of the more than two dozen fatalities from Friday's (5/16) tornado outbreak occured in Laurel County, KY. "Right now, we're doing everything we can to be the mouthpiece of our community," says Josh Good, MM for Forcht Broadcasting, which includes Classic Country WLFG-AM/London. Tour Support: Dylan Gossett's The Westward Tour kicks off Sept. 11 in Birmingham and runs through November, including shows in Brooklyn, Boston, Toronto, Los Angeles and Denver. Tickets go on sale Thursday (5/22) here.

Bits & Pieces: The Grand Ole Opry is helping promote the Music City Rodeo, Nashville’s first-ever PRCA Pro event, with a rodeo-themed show May 27 featuring performances from Vince Gill, Moe Bandy, Kaitlin Butts, Wyatt Flores, Marcus King, Lukas Nelson and Jenna Paulette. Some of the PRCA rodeo athletes scheduled to participate in the weekend’s competitions will also make appearances. Tickets here.
In other Opry news, Carly Pearce unveiled a custom, Dolly Parton-themed microphone stand during her May 16 show at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. Commissioned exclusively for the Opry’s 100th year, the stand features rhinestones, pink and purple butterflies and other design elements inspired by Parton's style. It will be used throughout the Opry’s centennial celebration.

Chronicle: Veteran broadcaster Jack Dillard passed May 17. He was 93. After serving as a county agent, Dillard became Farm Dir. for KWKH/Shreveport in 1959 and spent more than 20 years in the position. In 2002, he became a minority owner of KGAS-AM/Carthage, TX and KMHT/Marshall, TX. No word on services.
Guitarist/songwriter/producer Tony Haselden passed May 16. He was 79. Born in South Carolina, Haselden moved to Louisiana in the 1970s, and co-founded the pop group LeRoux in 1978. When the band went on hiatus in the mid 1980s, he moved to Nashville, and wrote numerous hits including "That's My Story" and "You Know Me Better Than That." Haselden later returned to Louisiana and resumed performing with the rebooted Louisiana LeRoux. He was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2010. No word on services.
Veteran broadcaster Ron Shapley passed May 15. He was 76. Shapley spent time as Dir./News and morning co-host on Country stations WLLR/Davenport, IA and WMSI/Jackson, MS before beginning a decade-long run as a host on News-Talk KMJ-AM/Fresno. No word on services. |
