Synopsis: Supports the development of undergraduate freshmen and sophomores from diverse backgrounds to pursue further studies and careers in bioengineering or STEM fields relevant to NIBIB’s scientific mission. Applications are encouraged to propose integrated educational activities that include 3 elements: a summer bridge program for incoming freshmen, and in the freshman and sophomore years, academic year activities and summer research experiences. The ESTEEMED program is intended to expose students to bioengineering research early in their college careers while also providing students didactic, mentoring and career development opportunities. This will prepare students to join, in their junior and senior years, an honors program that promotes STEM and entrance into a Ph.D. program. The ultimate goal is for the participants to pursue a doctoral degree and a subsequent research career in bioengineering or NIBIB-relevant field. Programs supported by ESTEEMED include 3 elements: Summer Bridge Program: Academic Year activities; and Summer Research Experiences.

Program: Safety Matters: Managing Relationships in Women’s Facilities
Synopsis
: Supports the delivery of gender-informed, research-based training programs to prepare correctional staff to implement practical operational strategies to improve women’s physical and sexual safety in a facility. Objectives of this funding opportunity is to
  -  Review and become familiar with the established curriculum, lesson plans, presentation slides, participant and trainer manuals, as well as any other adjunct training materials in preparation for program delivery.
  -  Delivery of the program will assist agencies and jurisdictions to (a) key dynamics of incarcerated women’s behavior and relationships; (b) build upon foundational training in gender-responsive practice and motivational interviewing skills and examine the intent and practical implementation of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards specific to promoting safety in incarcerated women’s relationships; (c) Embrace the importance of institutional culture in promoting sexual, physical, and emotional safety in women’s facilities; and (d) Intervene effectively and mitigate inappropriate inmate sexual, physical, emotional relationships and conflicts.

Synopsis: Supports the creation of new tenure-track faculty positions within the disciplines that comprise the AGS Geospace programs to ensure their vitality at U.S. universities and colleges. The aim of the Faculty Development in geoSpace Science (FDSS) is to integrate topics in geospace science including solar and space physics and space weather research into natural sciences or engineering or related departments at U.S. institutions of higher education (IHE). FDSS also stimulates the development of undergraduate or graduate programs or curricula capable of training the next generation of leaders in geospace science. Geospace science is interdisciplinary in nature and FDSS awardees will be expected to establish partnerships within multiple parts of the IHE. USC is eligible for track 1.
Award details: NSF funding will support the salary, benefits, and training of the newly recruited tenure-track FDSS faculty member for a duration of up to five years with a total award amount not to exceed $1,5M.

Synopsis
: Supports scholars whose research addresses the relationships between religion and culture in contemporary society and who wish to reach a broad audience through their written work. Applicants must be able to commit to a full semester or a full academic year. While a doctorate degree is generally required, the Admissions Committee considers applications from persons with qualifications other than a completed academic doctoral degree.

Program: Research on Education (Large grants)
Synopsis
: supports rigorous, intellectually ambitious, and technically sound research that is relevant to the most pressing questions and compelling opportunities in education; it also seeks to support scholarship that develops new foundational knowledge that may have a lasting impact on educational discourse. The program supports proposals from multiple disciplinary and methodological perspectives, both domestically and internationally, from scholars at various stages in their careers. Spencer welcomes methodological diversity in answering pressing questions and is open to projects that utilize a wide array of research methods, including quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, ethnographies, design-based research, participatory methods, and historical research.

Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD USA)
Program: Research Stays
Synopsis
: Supports scholars from U.S. and Canada for one to three months in all academic disciplines to pursue research at universities, libraries, archives, institutes, or laboratories in Germany. The aim of this particular program is to support short-term research stays and thus promote the exchange of experience and networking amongst colleagues. Grants are awarded for research and working projects and cannot be used for travel only. Airfare to Germany will not be covered and lecture tours, attendance at conferences or conventions, editorial meetings or extended guest professorships are not funded. Eligible candidates possess a Ph.D. and have been working in research or teaching full-time for at least two years at the time of application.
Award details: Monthly payments vary based on academic status. All DAAD Grantees receive mandatory health insurance through DAAD. The monthly contribution to the insurance is deducted from the stipend and cannot be waived.

Program: 2024 Chevalley Prize in Lie Theory
Synopsis
: Established in 2014 to honor Claude Chevalley, this prize awards mathematicians for notable work in Lie Theory published during the preceding six years — a recipient should be at most twenty-five years past the Ph.D. Chevalley made fundamental contributions to class field theory, algebraic geometry, and group theory. The prize is awarded in even-numbered years, without restriction on society membership, citizenship, or venue of publication.

Program: Gender Equity in STEM Challenge
Synopsis
: Supports United States-based solutions that address barriers and unlock the untapped potential of girls and women in STEM nationwide. Solutions should include one or more of the following focus areas: support K-12 educators in effectively teaching and engaging girls in STEM in the classroom or afterschool settings; ensure continuity across STEM education to decrease successive drop-off in completion rates from K-12 through undergraduate years; create a more inclusive STEM workplace culture including through improving pay transparency, decreasing bias in hiring and promotion, introducing and upholding healthy behaviors and organizational role models, and/or bolstering wraparound supports for workers who are caregivers; or enable women STEM entrepreneurs to participate and thrive in the entrepreneurial ecosystem by providing access to capital, resources, or network-building, or diversifying the investor landscape. Proposed solutions are encouraged to recognize the importance of Intersectionality and the compounding nature of sexual orientation and gender identity, racial demographics, disability status, and other dimensions of diversity.
Award details: Prizes range from $50K to $250K.

Program: Jacob W. Waletzky Award
Synopsis
: Supports and recognizes a scientist who is within 15 years of his / her Ph.D. or M.D.  And whose independent research has led to significant conceptual and empirical contributions to the understanding of drug addiction. Both basic and clinical researchers are eligible for the award. Future plans to continue to make significant contributions to addiction research and treatment is one of the selection criteria. The Waletsky Award Prize Fund and the Waletzky Family endow this award.

  -  Develop new or augment existing benchmark datasets comprised of genetic, phenotypic, environmental, climatic, and physiological data on crops or livestock for the purpose of 8 testing, training, and comparing predictive analytic tools by the data science community with potential wide application in agricultural fields
  -  Address technological or institutional barriers that prevent effective collaboration with for-profit entities whose involvement is critical for the development of robust predictive analytic tools for agricultural genomes to phenomes research.
  -  Combine plant and animal genomic information with phenotypic and environmental data through an interdisciplinary framework, leading to a novel understanding of plant and animal processes that affect growth, productivity, and the ability to predict performance, which will result in the deployment of superior varieties and species to producers and improved plant and animal management recommendations for farmers and ranchers;
  -  Improve curricula and training involving cross-disciplinary research approaches for students and scientists in order to develop expertise in the agricultural genome to phenome research; and
  -  Build on genomic research to understand gene function in production environments that is expected to have considerable returns for crops and animals of importance to the agriculture of the United States.

Program: 2024 Enrico Fermi Presidential Award
Synopsis
: One of the most prestigious science and technology awards bestowed by the U.S. government, the Fermi Award recognizes individual(s) of international stature for exceptional scientific, technical, policy, and/or management achievements related to the broad missions of the DOE and its programs to address energy, environmental and nuclear challenges through transformative science and technology solutions.
Nominations must include a letter summarizing the candidate’s achievements, three to six letters of support, CV, and short bibliography. An independent panel of eminent, international experts is convened by the DOE to review nominations. Final award selections are made by the President of the United States. 
Award details: Citation signed by the President of the United States and the Secretary of Energy, a gold-plated medal bearing the likeness of Enrico Fermi and an honorarium of $100K. In the event the award is given to more than one individual in the same year, the recipients share the honorarium equally.

Synopsis: Supports research centers focused on major, long-term fundamental chemical research challenges. CCIs that address these challenges will produce transformative research, lead to innovation, and attract broad scientific and public interest. CCIs are agile structures that can respond rapidly to emerging opportunities through enhanced collaborations. CCIs integrate research with strong broader impacts, including innovation, education, broadening participation, and informal science communication. The CCI Program is a two-phase program. Phase I CCIs receive significant resources to develop the science, management and broader impacts of a major research center before requesting Phase II funding. Satisfactory progress in Phase I is required for Phase II applications; Phase I proposals funded in FY 2024 will seek Phase II funding in FY 2027. The FY 2024 Phase I CCI competition is open to projects in all fields supported by the Division of Chemistry, and must have scientific focus and the potential for transformative impact in chemistry, with priority given to fundamental chemistry projects aligning with articulated Division of Chemistry budget priorities (e.g., Climate Research and Sustainability, AI etc.). The FY 2024 Phase II CCI competition is open to projects funded as Phase I awards in FY 2021.
Award details: NSF anticipates making up to three new Phase I awards (each up to $1,800M for 3 years) as standard or continuing grants. NSF also anticipates up to one new Phase II award (up to $4M per year for 5 years) as a cooperative agreement.

Synopsis: Supports the development, testing, and validation of outcome-focused mental health care quality measures, in a form suitable for submission to, and endorsement by, relevant regulatory or governing bodies. These measures should be developed with consultation with the relevant governing bodies prior to submission, to ensure that the requirements of the governing body will be met, and to help ensure the development of an acceptable and implementable measure. It is expected that recipients [of this award] will communicate with one another, through participation in PI meetings, as well as other activities that the Program Directors may choose to develop. These meetings may provide a forum to discuss topics such as project updates, the process of submission to governing bodies, strategies that can be used to improve standards and validation procedures for quality measures, and best practices to disseminate findings to clinical and policy communities. NIH staff may participate in meetings as a resource. Research must be conducted in the U.S. or with clear relevance to the U.S. domestic health system.

Synopsis: Supports research training of promising post-doctorates early in their postdoctoral training period, who have the potential to become productive investigators in any research area aligned with the BRAIN Initiative, including neuroethics. Applicants are expected to propose research training in an area that clearly complements their predoctoral research. Formal training in analytical tools appropriate for the proposed research is expected to be an integral component of the research training plan. In order to maximize the training potential of the F32 award, this program encourages applications from individuals who have not yet completed their terminal doctoral degree and expect to do so within 12 months of the application due date. On the application due date, candidates may not have completed more than 12 months of postdoctoral training.
Award details: Individuals may receive up to 3 years of aggregate Kirschstein-NRSA support at the postdoctoral level, including any combination of support from institutional training grants (e.g., T32) and an individual fellowship award. Award budgets are composed of stipends, tuition and fees, and institutional allowance to help defray the cost of fellowship expenses such as health insurance, research supplies, equipment, books, and travel to scientific meetings. In addition to the standard institutional allowance, the application may request up to $5,000 annually to defray the cost of participation in meetings including annual BRAIN Initiative meetings.

Program: Fundamental Research to Understand the Mechanisms of Neurotropic Virus-mediated Disease

Synopsis: Supports fundamental research into mechanisms that lead to neuropathogenesis after acute viral infection of the CNS. To fill this important knowledge gap, proposed projects will focus on less-studied emerging and re-emerging neurotropic viruses for which there are currently no approved vaccines or therapeutics such as non-polio enteroviruses, flaviviruses, alphaviruses, bunyaviruses and paramyxoviruses. Examples of studies of interest include but are not limited to:
  -  Identification of cellular host factors and mechanisms of cellular tropism of viral infection 
  -  Route and mechanisms of invasion of the CNS (e.g., blood-brain barrier, blood-CSF barrier)
  -  Role of direct viral factors and host immune response/host cell signaling in inflammation of the CNS
 -  Development and refinement of in vitro and in vivo models for viral neuropathogenesis.
