Transfer Alliance Program (TAP)

February 2026 - Issue 2

As you grow more comfortable at UML, try not to be satisfied with only going to classes. If you are able, take advantage of all the opportunities you can that UMass Lowell offers!

Look out for clubs and events that interest you on CampusGroups and follow along with the rest of this newsletter to learn how to get more experiences out of UML than just your degree.

TAP’s LEGO Night

We had a great time building Legos and enjoying snacks on Wednesday, Feb 11.

It was so fun to see everyone creating imaginative builds and connecting with each other. I hope everyone enjoys the TAP merch and congratulations to the two students who won our raffles – one for a Lego car and the other for a UML bookstore gift card!

TAP Drop-In Hours

Starting the week of March 1, TAP peer allies will be stationed in different areas across campus for you to stop by. If you want a study buddy, help finding a resource, a question answered, or just someone to talk to, they are excited to be there for you.

These can also be great spaces for just hanging out, studying or decompressing after a long day. The folks who run these programs have explicitly said that transfer students are welcome anytime, so take advantage of their hospitality.

On South Campus: The Allen House

  • Mondays: Noon-3 p.m.
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays: 9-10:30 a.m., 1-2 p.m.
  • Wednesdays: Noon-1:30 p.m.
  • Fridays: Noon-2 p.m.

On East Campus: University Crossing third floor, Office of Multicultural Affairs

  • Mondays: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Tuesdays: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

You do not have to be a TAP student to take advantage! If you need help with anything, the peer allies are so excited to be a friendly face and provide resources for you.

Expand Your Opportunities

Co-op/Internships

Getting full-time work experience during your time in college is invaluable in today’s job market. The Professional Co-op Program and Internships are both great ways to get industry job experience while you are earning your degree. There is even a possibility that you can do these work experiences for course credit!

Feel free to ask me about this! I participated in the co-op program during my time as a UML undergrad.

River Hawk Experience Distinction (RHED)

If the time commitment of a co-op is not ideal for you and your academic journey, consider the RHED program instead. RHED offers students the chance to blend a personal interest with their academic major and receive recognition. Dive into one of RHED’s six personal interest topics (called Distinctions): leadership, entrepreneurship, global engagement, community engagement, sustainability and interprofessional engagement. It is not a huge commitment; only two courses and two experiences with reflections are required, and you earn a special notation on your transcript highlighting your achievement.

I completed the RHED program when I was earning my bachelor’s degree and would be more than happy to talk about it with you if you would like.

Study Abroad

Studying abroad can offer you a chance to experience another culture, travel, meet people from all over the world and possibly learn another language. There are so many different locations, durations and programs available so you have a lot of flexibility to choose whichever makes the most sense for you!

There are financial aid and scholarship opportunities for the study abroad program as well, if you would like to participate, but would like additional support.

4+1 Program

If you are considering earning your master’s following your bachelor’s degree, the 4+1 program is a way to accelerate earning your master’s degree too. If you are planning to earn your master’s degree in the same field as your bachelor’s, the 4+1 can double-count some of your courses to save both time and money for your master’s education.

Ask me about this too, if you’re curious to know more! I am currently finishing up my master’s degree in the 4+1 program and would love to answer any questions you may have.

Career Fairs

Whether you are looking for a co-op or internship, a full-time job for after you graduate, or want to network and see what the career fair is all about all are encouraged to attend! There are many different career fairs taking place (some even this week!) that you can explore.

You can always go to the Career & Co-op Office on the fourth floor of University Crossing for help with your resume or career advice too.

For jobs related to business, information management, operations, project and product management, marketing and sales, financial services (accounting, real estate, insurance, banking), marketing communications and public relations, media (digital media, journalism) and graphic design go to the Careers in Business Fair on Thursday, Feb. 26 from 3-6:30 p.m.

For jobs related to behavioral and mental health, community and social services, health data and administration, public health and wellness go to The Human Impact Fair on Wednesday, March 18 from 3-5:30 p.m.

Additional career opportunities are:

  • Nursing Tabling Series – Mondays February - April
  • Criminal Justice Tabling Series – Monday, March 3 – Thursday, April 2
  • Massachusetts Educational Recruiting Consortium – Thursday, April 23

Upcoming TAP Event

Join us for the transfer student basketball game on Saturday, Feb 28 at 1 p.m. at the Kennedy Family Athletic Complex on North Campus.  Join us to cheer on the River Hawks against UMBC and be sure to wear your TAP T-shirt. Don’t have one? That’s OK! The TAP peer allies and I will be giving out free shirts to students before the game starts, while supplies last.

Be sure to reserve your student tickets before you go using the instructions on the UML athletics website or on the River Hawk Rewards app. Tickets must be claimed online using your student.uml.edu email to receive free admission.

Parking will be available for free in the Riverside lots by the facility as well as in the North Campus Garage. UMass Lowell students with children are welcome to bring their children to the game. To coordinate, please contact Kristen_Coyle@uml.edu from your student email and she will be happy to help.

Job Opportunity

Fall 2026 TAP Peer Ally Applications are Open

If you have an interest in helping incoming UML transfer students transition to the university, being a peer ally may be for you! The role of Transfer Alliance Program (TAP) peer ally gives you the opportunity to pass the information you have learned at the university to a new group of students. Each Peer Ally is assigned a group of students who requested a match up. Then, as an ally, you would reach out, answer questions, connect new students with UML resources, etc. TAP sponsors activities about once a month during the semester, so you can meet your mentees and have some fun.

The stipend for the semester is $500. If you have any questions or would like more information, don’t hesitate to reach out!

To apply:

Submit the documents below to TAP@uml.edu by 5 p.m. on March 20, 2026.

  1. Resume including work and educational experience
  2. One (1) brief letter of support from a UMass Lowell faculty or staff member sent to TAP@uml.edu
  3. Cover letter indicating your reasons for applying (250-500 words)

Cheers!
