Dear Seren,
Every year in June we celebrate Pride Month, in recognition of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising that took place in New York City, beginning on June 28, 1969. The month commemorates the LGBTQ+ community, and their impact and influence in furthering equal rights and inclusion.
On Saturday, June 8, the annual Capital Pride Parade will be held in Washington, D.C. Members of the GW community are invited to participate in GW Pride Stride, a march together in unity and support of diversity, inclusion and love. Find more Pride Month events happening in the D.C. area.
Soon after that will be Juneteenth, honoring the date June 19, 1865, when freedom was granted to enslaved black people in Texas. The National Museum of African American History and Culture will be hosting a community day on Saturday, June 15.
From June 18-20, the National Archives will have a special display of the Emancipation Proclamation and the General Order No. 3, the legal degree issued in Galveston, Texas by Civil War Union General Gordon Granger, declaring slaves as free.
Stay tuned about other events this summer in and around the D.C. area or in your local community related to these commemorations.
Wishing you a wonderful summer.
