Older Americans Month
Older Americans Month is a national celebration that occurs each May in the United States. It was established in 1963 and is led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL). The purpose of Older Americans Month is to recognize the contributions of older Americans, highlight trends related to aging, and reaffirm commitments to serving older adults in communities. This year's theme is "Flip the Script on Aging," encouraging individuals and communities to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about aging.

Noah Parker Lipshutz, PharmD, BCCCP
I did my first residency in Pharmacy Practice at Memorial Regional Hospital in Broward County, FL, and my second residency specializing in Critical Care at UCSF in San Francisco, CA.
In our ICUs here at the U, I take care of many of our elderly patients when they're at their sickest, and delirium is a major disease state that affects patients of all ages. Minimizing polypharmacy while ensuring we address deliriogenic conditions such as pain, day-night cycle flipping, suboptimal medication and procedure/test timing, and poor access to orienting items like reading glasses and hearing aids is a key piece of the job description for ICU pharmacists. I am excited to learn even more about delirium, especially with regard to caring for geriatric patients specifically and high risk medications in the setting of difficult-to-treat medical conditions, and applying these lessons to my patients. I think gaining a firmer understanding of the exact risk certain conditions vs medications pose will help me in weighing the risk/benefit of interventions; for example, the risk opioids pose in an elderly patient who is experiencing uncontrolled pain that may currently be contributing to delirium. Exchanging practice ideas and learning from experts in the field at the fellowship program is something I'm excited to take part in!

| Jenny Sinclair, MOT, OTR/L
Over the last 18 years, Jenny has worked in acute inpatient care across multiple units at the University hospital. She most recently worked with her department director to develop the inaugural position for an OT in the emergency department.
Her emphasis is with older adult care, specifically functional assessments, home safety recommendations, and fall risk reduction.
As a recipient of the American Delirium Society and Borten Family Charitable Trust Quality Improvement/Implementation Science Fellowship, she intends to investigate the feasibility of screening ED patients for delirium & implementing early management & prevention strategies.

Master Plan for Aging - in Action
Submitted the most recent version of the Master Plan for Aging to the Interim Health and Human Services committee in early May along the 2023-24 UCOA Annual Report. Will be meeting with the committee in late summer or early fall for a more in-depth briefing.
Caregiving sector with Family Caregiving Roundtable (FCR) is working with national resource provider Trualta to create a lower threshold entry cost point for their product to build a following of success and then stage access to include the entire state. The FCR had delegates training in a mentoring program in NYC that is being rolled out in May in Utah.
Technology efforts to coordinate with Tech Charities Dennis Lifferth for the delivery of several dozen electronic devices and peripherals to be refurbished for placement in older adult homes. Lifferth also sits on the UCOA.
Health Living includes engaging in lifetime learning. Arts is a major part of the work behind the creation of the Utah Creative Aging Coalition and the planning of a two-week statewide series of community events, Kaleidoscope Festival. UCOA ‘s website is the host site for content and enrollment in the festival.
Executive Director Ence participates in a national workgroup with Lifetime Arts to support the work of the Creative Aging Co-Lab which is a monthly virtual meet-up of like-minded individuals and thought leaders to determine engagement and explore practical solutions in the aging space rooted in real challenges and opportunities. Utah was the first to include language about arts in aging as part of its MPA. Ence advises a policy workgroup from the same organization on how to get policy maker support for MPAs as well as aging program support.
Other Community Partner Engagements.
Working with WINGS committee to establish language around background checks for guardianship appointments and guidance for judges in helping determine the criteria for selection. Final product will impact guardianship issues by rules change or legislative action.
Executive Director Ence provided support to the Alzheimer’s association for their Walk program as well as two letters of support to obtain funding for training health providers how to better diagnose and transfer Alzheimer’s and related dementias and another to create and implement a guardian training program for those asked to serve in that role specifically for Alzheimer’s and related dementias individuals under their charge.
Executive Director Ence presented to the NASHP (National Academy for State Health Policy along with five other states to discuss each state’s experience and progress in creating an MPA and specifically the role of caregiving in those MPAs planned or established. Discussions included strategies used to gather feedback, foster engagement, and collaboration across sectors and agencies during the design process and what key challenges and successes have been experienced to date. Additional discussions were on including of caregiving in the plans and how much alignment is there between the MPA and the state plans on aging as required by OAA from the state unit on aging (Division of Aging and Adult Services in Utah). And finally, thoughts around navigating federal uncertainty and language considerations in the future planning process.

AGS/Aging Learning Collaborative
Multiple Chronic Conditions (MCC) Research
Become a MCC Champion
The AGS/AGING LEARNING Collaborative MCC Champions help support the Collaborative by drawing on the curricular resources and tools to enhance their teaching about people living with MCC and better prepare the next generation of investigators to include people living with MCCs in their research. MCC Champions share information about the curriculum at their institutions, encourage mentees and colleagues to complete the curriculum, and incorporate the MCC Teaching slides into lectures or presentations. Champions who report on activities focused on inclusion of people living with MCCs in research are recognized on the Collaborative website, at the AGS Annual Meeting, and will earn a Champion badge as well as a letter from AGS for inclusion in their promotions package.
More information about the Champion Program, including the MCC Champion Facilitator Guide can be found here.

The bristlecone pine tree (Pinus longaeva) - the earth’s oldest inhabitant with a life span of almost 5,000 years - is found only in Utah and five other western states. Its extraordinary longevity and ability to adapt and survive in extremely harsh environmental conditions above 10,000 feet embodies the investigative spirit and mission of the Utah Center on Aging.
