Ella Baker: Cancer Society

Senior Renalson Sullivan was a part of a committee of students and staff who got together to submit names for new poster features for the secondary campus hallways in honor of celebrating Black history throughout the month of February. Sullivan chose Ella Baker as one of the most influential black figures to him.

“She was a facilitator," he said. "She was the one behind things, progressing everything.” He admires her work behind the scenes that may go unnoticed by many.

Baker was a civil rights leader who worked closely with the NAACP, which stands for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

She began work as a field secretary in 1940 then moved to be the director of branches from 1943 to 1946. She worked to fight against Jim Crow laws in the south by co-founding the organization "In Friendship" with Stanley Levison and Bayard Rustin. She later moved to Atlanta in 1957 to help out with the organization of Martin Luther King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In 1960, she focused on helping young, upcoming activists and organized meetings with them.

Baker worked as an activist all the way until her death in 1986. She gained the nickname Fundi, which means “a person who teaches their craft to the next generation.” in Swahili. This nickname is a nod towards her influence on Black history in America.

Love it or hate it: Hush Hearts! 🤫💕

Hush Hearts is a Valentine's Day-themed activity that CAC has held every year around Valentine's Day! In this tradition, girls and boys take turns wearing a paper heart for the day (girls the first day and boys the second) and only get to keep it they refrain from speaking to the other gender. Junior Kaliyah Durden and freshman Hannah-Grace Twitty both have differing opinions on this game.

Kaliyah says that she looks forward to Hush Hearts every year. Last year she said that she lost her heart pretty early on, but this year she stood strong!

Hannah-Grace commented on the extreme lengths people go to in trying to steal people's hearts. She said they scream, steal, pull hair, and things get pretty chaotic.

Speak Up! - Scout Davis

Scout Davis is a freshman and this week is talking about the differences between high school and middle school. For the biggest difference, he said, “The environment; you’re a lot older and more mature, so you look at things differently.”

His advice to people going into high school is to really focus on the work, and don’t be afraid of anything because you’ll be able to find your people. For things Scout wishes he knew before going into high school, he said, “the work I thought would be impossible, but now that I’m getting old, it’s getting easier.” The hardest part about the transition is finding the people you can be really true friends with.
