Tektites and Portals
45 years ago, the editor of "Sky & Telescope" magazine handed Josh a small black lump of strange material: a glass meteorite - known as a tektite - that had fallen to Earth. Glass from the heavens? Fascinating! With the help of a friend who did a spectrographic analysis Josh was able to replicate the primeval formula of that little lump and created his own tektite glass, an unruly lava-like subtance that cools into a gnarly black carapace.
Then came the fun: creating work that juxtaposes this billion-years-old formula against the vibrant, flawless glass he uses to make Planets and his blown work. The result? "Tektites," which are sculpted vessels with gleaming interiors and rough, otherworldly exteriors, and "Portals," whose coarse exteriors encase solid glass worlds full of evocative scenes that are viewed through a polished clear window.
Tektites and Portals: both inspired by a little piece of the sky that piqued Josh's imagination a lifetime ago. Click photos below to see more in our online gallery, including some vintage beauties!
