The Class of 1974 50th Reunion
Save the Dates: May 24-27, 2024
Hello classmates!
We hope you are saving the dates to join us for our 50th reunion May 24-27, 2024 (Memorial Day and commencement weekend.) This month we are communicating with you to foster connections, starting with our website -- www.oberlin74reunion.com. Check it out! Fill out your profile and be relentlessly narcissistic. We are a community, and we want to hear from and about you.
Add recollections to your profile, and don’t miss the three photo galleries from our time at Oberlin. The website includes an archive of Oberlin Review articles—including advertisements—to reacquaint you with the times. Add your personal stories of travels domestic and abroad. On the site you can send personal emails to one person or the entire class. You can share comments about when things changed and became seminal moments. Our senior yearbook photos are available on the site. You can extract yours to include in the profile’s photos. It’s a hoot to see how we’ve changed (or not) in the last 50 years.
There were once 709 classmates, with subsequent attrition from deaths (84), classmates gone AWOL(undetermined), working, retired, second or third careers, personal evolution and growth. It’s all there, and it is interesting and fun to catch up. Help fill in the “Our Oberlin 1970-74” timeline with your own experiences -- your walk across Tappan Square with Howard Cosell, your brief encounter with Kenny Loggins at the Co-op bookstore, your Winter Term experiences, your participation in protests, the day you painted the Rock, the modern dance class you took with Brenda Way, the Exco course you taught. Just click on the link “Contact Us” and send your addition so Sandy Mattingly, our site administrator, can add it. And don’t forget to look at “What’s New” on the top line from time to time.
The profiles we’ve gotten so far remind us of how varied, talented, curious, and challenging we all were then – and still are now. We think you’ll be hooked as well. Read them, and add yours.
Here’s a bit of nostalgia from Donn Ginoza:
“One of the more amazing memories I have is getting to watch Tommie Smith take a spin around the track. It was a cold wet April day. Tommie came out in this silver gold nylon headgear and shades looking like Spiderman. Luther Jones ran as the rabbit. And there went the jets and Tommie ran the turn. Shades of Mexico City 1968. Tommie was the track and basketball coach for a few years. We were privileged to be a sanctuary for him and Jack Scott. Tommie drove around town in a yellow Porsche Carerra."
We look forward to connecting with you on the website—and at the reunion in May. To add photos to your profile, follow the instructions in section 6 of First Time Visitors. Sandy has done a great job making it easy to add photos. He’s also adding a new link that will let you know who plans to attend the reunion. We hope to see you on the list!
