What a wonderful start to the school year! As we settle into routines at RSES, your support is essential to ensure smooth days for everyone.

Please note the following:

Drop-off and Pick-up: With more drivers this year, if your child can take the bus, please have them do so. Follow Officer Greg’s directions carefully, and kindly refrain from using cell phones while in line.

Dogs on Campus: We love dogs, but ask that all pets be leashed and that families with dogs avoid gathering at the bottom of the stairs to keep everyone safe and calm.

Wednesday Morning Supervision: We need one parent volunteer weekly to assist with early drop-offs at 7:40 AM while teachers meet. Mrs. Archey will guide you. Volunteers must be fingerprinted and approved. (Sign up here.)

Attendance Goals: Last year, 23.4% of RSES students were chronically absent. This year, we aim to reduce that to under 20%. Please schedule vacations and appointments outside school hours or breaks. After six unexcused absences, a truancy prevention meeting is required, and after ten, court involvement may occur. We will keep you informed with courtesy calls after two unexcused or five total absences. Refer to the ECSD absence policy here and the truancy policy here.

Drop Off and Pick Up Guidelines from Officer Greg

Dear RSES Families,

The safety of RSES students is our priority, this includes morning drop off and afternoon pick up, please drive
slow, and please NO cell phone use during drop off/pickup.

The school’s entrance off N. Frontage Rd. is complicated. Cars turning right into school (from the east) have
the right of way. Cars turning left must yield to the right turning cars. Many parents alternate, with right
turning cars letting left turning cars alternate in. The left turning car may not turn until there is enough room
not to stick out into or block N. Frontage Rd.

The right turning driver should stop and give a signal to the left turning car, a quick wave or a headlight flash. Not everyone who picks up will know this process, we may have grandparents, or relatives picking up who are not familiar, be patient.

Officers are not going to assist in the alternating process. We are there to prevent left turns, and assist busses and pedestrians. Unless we give you clear and specific direction, the alternating is up to you.

The School bus and Town of Vail busses both need to access the turnout below school. Please yield to busses to allow them in or out.

Many parents bypass the carpool lines on N. Frontage and turn from the drive lane into the lower school entry to drive up and park. This is dangerous, if this type of turn causes an accident the driver who made the illegal turn will almost certainly be at fault.

The drop off lane directly in front of school is a designated fire lane marked by a red painted curb. There is no parking or unattended vehicles allowed here during the day (outside of drop off and pick up). Please park in a designated parking spot.

If an emergency occurs during pick up or drop off, Police, Fire and/or EMS may need to get to the front of school and won’t fit past the carpool line. The carpool line may be stopped to allow a Fire Truck or Ambulance to go the wrong way up the exit side of the driveway.

For large afterschool functions, like the Holiday Concert, the parking garage must be filled prior to anyone parking on the driveway or on Frontage Rd. Validation vouchers will be provided by the school. Please consider the parking garage as an option for drop off or pickup as well.

Due to the adjacent construction project, residents of the property to the east are sharing the driveway. There will be a flagger present at the driveway to Solar Vail, please let these cars out to turn right. We will also see increased heavy truck traffic on N. Frontage. We are monitoring this process for safety and will
make changes as necessary.

Stops Signs, by law, require a complete stop. This is an expectation
at both stop signs exiting school.

• Alternate turning from Frontage Rd. (at your own risk)
• Yield to School and Town Busses
• Do not turn unless there is room, do not stick out into N. Frontage.
• Hug the right shoulder and minimize gap between cars up the driveway, pull as close as you comfortably can
• No cell phone use in line (pay attention!!!)
• Yield to busses, pedestrians and bicycles give them extra space.
• Use crosswalks when walking kids into school
• Have carpool hang tag visible with child’s first and last name
• Have kids ready to exit the car when approaching drop off area
• Kids can open their own doors and get in/out of the car own in drop off area
• No daytime parking in red drive lane/ fire lane in front of school

Welcome back! K-5 artists have started the year learning about routines and expectations for Art class. They are also creating sketchbooks that will be used during the school year.

We're back!  The Red Sandstone Tigers upper grades began the new school year working on Musical Genres and even gave presentations on their favorite types and artists.  We will begin working on reading rhythms in the coming weeks.   The Kindergarten through 2nd grade are working on long and short sounds and the steady beat in music.  Of course, we are singing and dancing too!  Look for information about upcoming performances!

We’re off to an exciting start in STEM! Here is a quick overview of what your students are exploring in September. 

5th Grade – Students are taking on the challenge of building bridges with the best strength-to-weight ratio. Through this project, they’re learning about engineering, design testing, and structural efficiency.

4th Grade – We’re diving into biomimicry, studying how nature inspires innovation. Students are also learning to present their ideas using Google Slides—a great way to build both creativity and tech skills!

3rd Grade – Our focus is on natural hazards and natural disasters. Students are discovering how communities can prepare and stay safe... get ready for the jello challenge! 

2nd Grade – We’re exploring simple machines and incorporating them into student-designed pinball machines. (Thank you to Ptarmigan Sports for donating all those shoeboxes to make this possible!)

Kindergarten & 1st Grade – Our youngest engineers are learning the basics of structure and design by building towers.

Hello, everyone! We have had a great start to the year. It has been so much fun seeing
all of the students again and joining in on all of the energy they have brought to PE.
So far this year, we have been focusing on whole group games, partner activities, and
getting to know new classmates. We have also been practicing how we should safely
clean up all of the equipment after the game or activity has ended. We have started the year strong with lots of smiles and enthusiasm.

Welcome to a brand new school year! I’m so excited to see all of our students—both familiar faces and new ones—back in the building, ready for an exciting year of learning and growing together!

In the next few weeks in Kindergarten, we’ll be exploring all the fun parts of school—getting to know our teachers and new friends, learning classroom routines, and discovering what it means to be a Red Sandstone Tiger! We’ll learn about important traits like Respect, Success, Empower, and Solve, and how they help us thrive at school.

1st through 5th graders will start the year by reviewing our PBIS expectations and what it means to be respectful, successful, empowered, and problem-solving students in different areas of the school. We’ll engage in discussions, activities, and games to help us remember how to show these traits every day.

Later this month, we’ll begin work around growth and fixed mindsets, and how developing a growth mindset can help us reach our goals and achieve academic success!

Congrats to Nutrition Services for making Eagle County School District an Alliance for Healthier Generation Breakfast Trailblazer.  (We are the only district in the state to have this distinction).   The switch from sweet to savory breakfast menus decreased the amount of added sugar served at breakfast.   The breakfast menus offer sustaining energy to our students' brains and bodies. And, over the past two years, breakfast numbers have more than doubled for the district.  

The accessible version of the school lunch menus, allergen list and Free/Reduced Lunch application is available at https://www.eagleschools.net/departments/nutrition-services. Free/Reduced Lunch applications must be received by September 26, 2025 to be eligible to get your child’s ECSD school and sports fees waived or discounted for the 2025-2026 school year. Free lunch eligible students qualify for 100% off most ECSD fees. Reduced lunch eligible students qualify for 50% off most ECSD fees. All school meals listed on the breakfast and lunch menu are free for all students through December due to Colorado's Healthy School Meals for All Program.
