WashU Investigator Credits ICTS Resources and Funding on Path to $2.8 million Grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
|
Christine O’Brien, PhD, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering at WashU, was recently granted $2.8 million from the NIH to develop a wearable device to track blood loss to prevent postpartum hemorrhage – the leading cause of maternal death worldwide. O’Brien says having an entity like the ICTS gives investigators at the university an immense edge, while being surrounded by a rich set of supporters and experts to help refine the “good ideas”, particularly in the clinical space.

Participants were required to have already designed and implemented exemplary translational science education and training opportunities.

Empower the next generation of medical researchers! The CRTC is seeking experienced researchers to welcome undergraduate students as full-time team members this summer in the ASPIRE program. As an ASPIRE mentor, you’ll support mentees as they deepen their clinical research knowledge and contribute to a key aspect of your active project. Program dates for summer 2026 are Monday, June 1st – Friday, July 31st.

Enhance your research journey by enrolling in Clinical Investigation courses for the spring semester! Eligible individuals not enrolled in a WashU degree program are able to enroll in up to 9 credits of coursework as a non-degree seeking scholar. Credits earned can later be applied to the certificate or Master of Science in Clinical Investigation. Scholars will gain knowledge in the core competencies of clinical research and investigation including study design, statistical approaches, and scientific communication. Apply by January 5, 2026.

Clinical Research Training Center (CRTC) Seeks Applications for T1L Predoctoral Clinical Research Program
The TL1 Predoctoral Program provides career development for medical and allied healthcare students through didactic coursework, mentored training, work-in-progress research discussions, journal clubs, and conferences. Scholars in the program learn to design and conduct clinical research, analyze data, consider relevant ethical and legal issues, write manuscripts and grants, develop and present scientific posters, and compete for research funding. Apply for the program by December 31, 2025.

Apply Now for the 2026 Faculty Track of Compass – A Leadership Development Program for Researchers
Compass for Faculty helps junior faculty develop essential skills to lead and manage research teams effectively amid today’s challenges in higher education and science. The 10-week program offers independent and team-based learning, peer mentoring, and resources for ongoing support. Instructors, assistant/associate professors, staff scientists, and other research leaders from various disciplines are welcome. The program will begin in January 2026, and applications are due by December 26, 2025.

Submissions should highlight the innovative processes, programs, and assessments happening at your hub that support translational impact. The summit will be held virtually on March 2-3, 2026.
